Somehow I forgot that the most important thing about a video is how the performer herself looks. The cinematographer we got lit her in a way that was unflattering. The video itself was an amateurish mess and had to be totally scrapped. Luckily she had recently shot an HBO special and we were able to excerpt her performance of “Edge of Seventeen” to maintain her exposure on MTV. I had a significantly enhanced respect for video directors and never tried dabbling in their field again. The experience reminded me that it was the artist’s job to be creative and my role was to be their advocate. Although Stevie was irritated for a few weeks, she soon forgave me and never mentioned this embarrassing error in judgment.

It's so weird because I do remember seeing it on tv. And it was certainly before the Internet got started so I know for sure I'm not confusing it with seeing it on youtube or something. Maybe they just played it a few times on MTV and pulled it; or maybe they played it on a local station or something along those lines. But I certainly do remember seeing it on tv "back in the day," yeah!

P.S. - By the way, I think maybe there's "proof" that I'm not misremembering this; the video is clearly from a poor-quality video tape, presumably from taping it off the air when it was first broadcast. You can tell from the way it sort of "skips" at the beginning. So I really do think I'm right, this was on tv - it's definitely a puzzle for me that's fersure!

I wonder how many tape generations this video got copied, before it got in our hands.ya I'd notice there was a glich {Drop out} at the beginning of the video.Since video is part of my livelyhood,Repairing equipment, shooting videos and dubbing them too.
to me the master or first copy tape, VHS or Betamax was badly beatin up by poor care of badly mantained vcr,Yes they get the munchies too,it got hungry and eatin' the tape. Also the speed of the original recording matters too,if was recorded on slp,ep or beta 3 speed, which these copies we see on here look like they were.Thank goodness when Stevie got the Standback Civil war video on dvd.
anyway I hope there is a superclean master tape sitting somewhere
in the archives.

the vhs i have is pretty clean and clear. there are 2 or 3 alternate edits/versions of each video. it includes the civil war version of SB, along with 2 other edits of the classic SB video. 3 alt. edits of SDMHA, 2 for IAF, and TTM. and the 2 edits of EO17 (concept/performance edit and performance only edit) i think thats it. might have Insider video as well but im not sure. before each video there is info on the director, the dates, song title/artist of course, and what i assume are copyright/catalog numbers? i have the original edit for TTM on another tape which was put up on youtube awhile back. it was the edit that was world premiered on MTV (as seen in the clip). the quality only looks bad cause it was uploaded thru an ipod camera.
