I agree with you about Landslide. But the other performance by that group of kids who did Dreams, I enjoyed that performance. Only two of those kids sang off key, but the lead singer was really good IMO. And I know I'm the only one here who thinks so.

Her performance sounded to me like the Smashing Pumpkins version. It sounds like she was basing it more on that than Stevie's or even the Dixie Chicks version.

From GQ, 2-24-2010
http://www.gq.com/blogs/the-q/2010/0...ts-crappe.html Three Things About Last Night's American Idol: In Which a Perfectly Nice Fleetwood Mac Fan Gets Crapped On By Four Grown Millionaires Women go first this year and the batch is almost cynically diverse. There's a busking white girl in dreads (Crystal Bowersox, who did double duty on acoustic guitar and harmonica), a black female country singer (Haeley Vaughn), a "quirky" girl (Lilly Scott), and a precocious ingénue (Katie Stevens). Perfect for montages, these ladies are. But the early frontrunners (Bowersox, Stevens) hardly made an impression this week. Instead a couple of outliers emerged, for better and worse. And Randy Jackson actually took a position. THE GOOD THING: Cape Cod oddball and apprentice glassblower (!) Siobhan Magnus, she of the jean jacket/baby doll dress/legwarmers/Chuck Taylors ensemble during Hollywood Week, was caught during her pre-taped interview asking a producer what the term "dark horse" meant, God bless her. In her modified cheongsam (that's pronounced CHONG-sam), Siobhan (that's pronounced SHA-von) looked older and duller this week—she's 19—but delivered an almost creepily composed—but dark and torn-asunder—performance of Chris Isaak's 1989 hit "Wicked Game." She said she chose the song because it's "so haunting." The judges were impressed but also mystified by the mechanical-in-person, transfixing-onstage singer. We were just impressed. THE BAD THING: Sixteen-year-old Haeley Vaughn is a niche dream come true. The Fort Collins, Colorado native auditioned for the show with a chirpy version of Idol Season Four winner Carrie Underwood's "Last Name." Immediately theories were floated: Could this be our first black female country siren? Um, no. For her big moment, the ever-smiling Vaughn eviscerated the Beatles' "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" (hear it here) with yodeling, down-home inflection, and a really weird rearranged bridge. Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi and new judge Ellen DeGeneres (inessential all night) had kind words for Vaughn; Simon Cowell (cranky, but not his typically incisive self) said it was "verging on terrible" and "a mess." None of this was particularly revelatory. Then Ellen, perhaps unaware of the social history of what she was about to say, shrieked "If it was a mess, it was a hot mess." So yeah, Ellen called a young black girl a "hot mess" on national television last night. No big deal. THE OTHER THING: There's always a bit of cognitive dissonance between the judges and the viewing public in these early-season episodes. None seemed as egregious as the tongue-lashing delivered to Lacey Brown, who was eliminated last year during Hollywood Week. Back with a new lease, she attempted Fleetwood Mac's harder-to-sing-than-you'd-think "Landslide" (hear it here) and pulled off a few neat tricks, including a terrific harmony with an unseen backup singer. Okay, so it wasn't perfect. But come on: Ellen: I think you're better than that. I think it didn't work out. Kara: Your falsetto was forced. Simon: It was quite depressing. It was just boring. You have nice eyes. Randy: [who is normally the King, or at least the Deputy Mayor, of Non-Statementville] It was terrible. We can't recall the last time Randy called anything "terrible." And yet Lacey, easily better than about half of the bunch last night, may be in serious peril. TOMORROW: Twelve dudes try not to sound like Justin Guarini.—Sean Fennessey — GQ Editor |

The Seattle Times, 2/24/2010
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...fine_fine.html Lacey Brown Song: "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac Umm, did she say/sing land-side?? I backed up my DVR 5-times and never heard an "L" in it. Yikes!!! I was cheering for Lacey, but she butchered my favorite female song of all-time. I found myself wanting to hear her male backup singer take over because he was doing a much better and more interesting job at the vocals. I am now begging Crystal to do Stevie Nicks & Fleetwood Mac right. Please take me up on my plea from a previous blog and sing this song for America. Lacey, I leave you with the poetics of our theme tonight..."You live you learn, you lose you learn." Best of luck in your musical future Miss Brown. |

Something happened and my DVR didn't record AI. I heard she was singing this and wanted to see it. But damn that was bad. I was really hoping to hear some Mac/Stevie this season, but so far everything has been a total dud.
