I listen to Tenth Avenue Freeze-out daily and for that, Born to Run gets my vote.

Well, at least y'all are getting one of these right!

I went with Damn the Torpedoes! since I think Bruce Springsteen (much like U2) is for the most part vastly overrated. If you'd picked Born in the USA instead of Born to Run, I'd have had to have thought about it, since that's the only album of his I genuinely like and can listen to.

My favorite Springsteen album is The River. That's his Tusk album as far as I am concerned.

Its in my top three (the other two being "Tunnel of Love" & "Wild/Innocent/E Street Shuffle").

Most Springsteen fans put "Born In The USA" in the bottom tier, mainly due to the overall lack of real substance compared to his other efforts. Bruce unabashedly & shamelessly did everything he could to make the most commercial album/cultivate the populist "working man" image he's known for... and he certainly succeeded. I can't blame him for that. Just don't judge him based on that one album- good or bad.

Default Slanted?

I voted for Tom Petty based on my musical tastes. Yet did Bruce have a chance in this face-off considering the Nicks/Petty music relationship?

I own Springsteen's first three albums, and "Nebraska". I haven't heard them in years, and I don't feel I need to now. After watching the four hour Tom Petty documentary ("Running Down a Dream") almost two years ago, I've gained high respect for a musician I already admired.

I'm the opposite of others. I never got tom petty. I just hear average tunes that don't have a unique style and could be by any artist from that time.

springsteen's music is about so much more tho for me. Its like a movement. I like most of his albums but actually like Magic the most cause its like a return to his earlier stuff but with a matured outlook.

Well, if you'd rather I said I don't like him in general, think he's overrated and sings like he's trying to have a bowel movement, I can certainly do that. Tho I do remember liking Tunnel of Love an awful lot, too.

My favorite song on Born in the USA was the only track never released as a single: Bobbie Jean.
I waited, but it never happened. They released all the others, why not that one?

Speaking of BORN TO RUN:

From Bruce Springsteen.net

BORN TO RUN IN CHICAGO 9/21
Either you were at the show in Chicago last night or you are probably wishing you were there: smack in the middle of an epic set, Bruce and the Band played "Born To Run" in its entirety. But that ain't all: among the audience requests were two never-before-played oldies-but-goodies: The Crystals' "Da Doo Ron Ron" (Couldn't you just hear Bruce singing "I met him on a Monday and my heart stood still?") and "Rockin' Robin," a 1958 hit for Bobby Day and revived by Michael Jackson as one of his first singles as a solo recording artist. Let's not forget the late, great Ellie Greenwich, who co-wrote "Da Doo Ron Ron" with Jeff Barry and Phil Spector.

FORGOT TO MENTION: HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRUCE!!! HE TURNS 60 TODAY!

Agreed. My top three are The River, Tunnel of Love, and Darkness on the Edge of Town.

Hard one as I like both of them, but had to go with Tom Petty, simply because it wasn't one of Bruce's better albums in my opinion. Then again, it wasn't one of Tom's either.

While lifting weights at the gym tonight, I posed this "classic albums face off" question to 3 guys nearby. (A Petty song from Damn the Torpedoes was playing, which gave me the idea.)

Vincenzo, John and John all voted for Petty. I was the lone Springsteen vote. They told me to change my vote and then proceeded to tell me all the songs on the Petty album and why I should have voted for it.

Live and Learn.

I love and adore TP forever and always, but I had to go with Bruce. I've been celebrating his greatness a lot to the point that he's the only artist I'm listening atm. Anyway, I love this album. I saw him a few weeks back and he played it all the way through and it just reminds me of my dad and my childhood and everything really amazing. So he wins here for me, even if Tom is the coolest dude ever.
