I signed the petition. However, what I said about solo artists from groups was that there have been many solo artists who came from groups including the ones you mentioned. All of the solo artists you mentioned, McCartney, Paul Simon, Clapton etc all continue to have HUGE solo careers. In all three cases their solo careers are on par with their group efforts.

i can honestly say in my circle of meeting people in life, when i mention stevie to them, 95% just love her~ all colors, ages, religions, people from different countries~ she is just that type of girl, whether you go for the airy fairy-ness as she has been called or for the fact that she is in my honest opinion one of the most awesome imaginative songwriters~ whether you like the fairytale, gypsy, sister of the moon aspect of stevie or the fact she has been around forever (bite my tongue) or the fact the hands down the babe can rock w/ the best of them~ she so flippin' deserves to get in as a solo act~ i personally love everything about her~ i can't imagine life w/ out her & her music, her stories of life that are entertwined in her songs, her beauty even as she ages, the chick is timeless elegance, also i love...just everything damnit!!!~

She was the undisputed biggest Female Artist in America from 81-83!!!
And still charted respectable numbers in the later 80's w/ Rock A little and TOSOTM, which went Top 10 after 3 weeks of release! So she remained strong during the whole decade, alongside her Fleetwood Mac imput!
Even the Rolling Stone readers polls earned her the favorite female singer many years...esp. 81-84.
I dont think you can compare Stevie w/ Pat or Heart, it's just apples and oranges to me...they all deserve it, but there's no denying that Stevie to this day, has the strongest and most influencial career...She's the long distance winner!
But the R&RHOF is not based on sales or chart positions. Inductions are based (well, they're supposed to be based)on the contribution the artist has made to rock music & the effect they've had on it. Of course I would love Stevie to be inducted, but realistically I don't know when it will happen. As popular as she was, she wasn't all that groundbreaking tbqh. Not that all artists in the R&RHOF were...

Have you SEEN the nominees this year? What a load of crap. Look who HASN'T been inducted...Genesis, Deep Purple, Moody Blues, Rush...all MORE than deserving IF they'd been Wenner's pet bands, but they never were a Rolling Stone favorite band, so they don't get considered come nomination time.

Plus, how can you even THINK of inducting Fleetwood Mac and not include Bob Welch?

Plus, what is "Rock & Roll"?? It's NOT Miles Davis, it's NOT the Beastie Boys, it's NOT Granmaster Flash, yet they've been inducted.

The only artists in this year's crew of nominees that fit the "Rock & Roll" label is John Mellencamp & The Ventures. Beyond that, the others aren't deserving.

Yes, that includes Madge.

It's the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME...not the POP HALL OF FAME!!

See, I consider Beastie Boys rock. I think they deserve it, I believe they really were groundbreaking. But you bring up a good point - where do we draw the line on what is "rock" music? I can see Miles Davis & other early blues artists being inducted because were the pioneers, so to speak. Without their influence, would there be rock music?

But more recent artists? I dunno. Madonna is not, nor has she ever been, rock. I don't think anyone would argue that. Has she changed music? Not really, IMO - she's changed the music BUSINESS. Rap artists have influenced music by making that type of music more mainstream & accessible to a wider audience, but that doesn't mean they're R&R artists. Maybe they should change the name to the Mainstream (or Popular) Music HoF.

I agree the RRHOF induction board is bs. Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner is the King of the board and we all have read Rolling Stone's less than stellular attitude towards her over the years. I think Stevie does deserve to be inducted as a solo artist. There are many contemporay artists who list Stevie as a major inspiration in thier lives.
I live in Cleveland and literally drive by the Rock Hall everyday on my way to work. The fact that the Rock Hall is here and they still have the induction ceremony in New York is a source of contention for many Clevelanders. They had the opening concert ceremony at the old Browns stadium and let me tell you it it was packed and it ROCKED.

Artistically, or in terms of sales?

Stevie's solo albums have not sold as well as FM's but that's a ridiculous standard to hold anyone to. FM has sold so many albums since 1975! The fact is, her solo career has been distinctive artisitcally and commericially. I will never enjoy solo Stevie as much as I do FM Stevie, but I still think she's done far more amazing things as a solo artist than most musicians who separate from their respective bands. Of course I signed the petition :-)

Partly because her sound has always had the stale whiff of session-stench.

She had two good albums, one okay album, and the rest have, um, fallen short of the glory of the Salamander. What's worse is that she has had almost as many compilations as actual solo albums.

Sorry, I just don't see it happening.
