Most recently they did it for the first date on the second leg of the SYW tour, Madison. I guess they didn't think it went down well, but that's a situation where I think Lindsey giving the song an introduction would have made the audience react to it differently.

I never heard why they did it for the Cage tour. Was it a message to Lindsey or did it simply fit Billy and Rick's playing style quite well?

It seems odd.
They performed it with Lindsey and Stevie at several white album concerts if I remember correctly. It is late at night as I write this sooooooooo not 100% sure. I bet Chilid would know the answer.
As for performing it in 1988 it was prob. Stevies' idea, I'd venture to guess.

They performed the song early on, in 1975, when Stevie and Lindsey first joined the band. They may have played it as late as 1978. The version from the LIVE album, I believe is from 1977. They played a lot of older Fleetwood Mac songs then, including a Christine/Chicken Shack song! Perhaps, because Don't Let Me Down is from the Buckingham Nicks era, it got lumped into that group of songs that were quickly and forever dropped from their set list consideration -- once they had plenty of Fleetwood Mac/Rumours material to fill the spot.

Thanx for all the backlog history on that. All happened well before I was born.
I suppose the band was feeling nostalgic on this tour and Vito and Burnette kindly obliged with the older material. Makes sense in the ways of Fleetwood Mac and the rights of passage. After all, Lindsey and Stevie played some Greenie early on. Learn the ropes by playing the chops of those who came before or something like that. Gotta say this version of dlmda is a bit overdrawn for my taste. Sometimes less is more fellows. The few mp3s I've heard of Lindsey playing green's material, he didn't try to reinvent the wheel yet made his mark in a powerfully respectful manner. Thanks for uploading these. I'd never before heard other guitarists cover the licks of buckingham nicks.

I don't think Lindsey had the vocal chops to do it this time around. He seems to be in great throat pain the past ten years or so.

Not Rick's but Billy's choice, probably. Billy loves Lindsey & would definitely have known the song, & probably figured, Well, here's Stevie, so let's do it.
