Very cool. I worked in radio for seven years. Two of those seven, I was the producer and talent for a top 40 morning show. Having to be up at 3:30AM, find the days news stories and create 8 funny bits to spread about your shift became exhausting. PLus, I absolutely hated the music (which was why I got into radio in the first place).
I think the news division would be much less stressful.

i do all that stuff. i've done just about everything there is to do here. it's a family owned group (not my family, just a local family), so those of us who have been loyal get all kinds of duties dumped on us that other stations would normally hire part timers to do.

i hate the music we play, except for our oldies station. we have the most bomb-ass oldies station anyone could ever hope to have (our library of music is RIDICULOUS because our music director is an audiophile, literally).. but instead of giving it a shot, they keep a struggling country trash station on autopilot on our FM frequency all the time and keep the oldies on a cruddy AM frequency. SIGH. we've lobbied the bosses for change, but when it comes down to it, i think they just don't want to pay to have new stickers, etc printed.. the van re-vinyled, etc. bummer.

I dont know what the news segments are like where you guys are from but we get a whopping 2 minutes TOPS. More like 1.5 minutes of soundbites, and commercials. I dont get my news from the radio, unless its Public Broadcasting, because it doesnt even last as long as a SONG does

we are very community based. lots of our liners bill us as the stations where "the news comes first" .. and we will break programming at any time of the day for breaking news.

i get as much time for my newscasts as i need, provided that i have ample time to play the paid-for commercials and other programming, like network national news.

i had a lot of **** to talk about last week... one day my hard news cut was like, 7:45.

WOW. In radio, that is a lifetime.

With private owners, that must be much more rewarding that working for a corporation. Good for you!

I can't believe you don't know about such an important european holiday named in your honor. It's like Bastille day, but not as French, and way funner. Cause you have minions. Vanessaminions.

Hello?

It is a lifetime. But not compared to the 17:10 in-depth special feature that aired Monday morning. My boss never gives me assignments, but last Friday, he was like.. "you know what I think would be cool? if you..."

we've had a very serious drought/heat wave situation.. and this particular area is feeling effects in so many different, negative ways. it was actually interesting to produce, because i had some great interviews from everyone from like.. public utilities, to farm service agencies, to river monitoring stations, etc.. and after it aired, i had a bunch, bunch, bunch of calls asking for even MORE information about different things like low-income energy assistance/air conditioning purchasing programs, crop testing, grant money available to farmers ('cuz they have like, 70% crop losses, no ****).. all kinds of stuff. in a way, this is a thankless job because you're out there saying so much to people who - unless they pick up the phone or shoot you an e-mail - can't talk back. so direct feedback like that was very, very rewarding. i'm not going to make it a regular thing, but you get what i'm saying.

No, wait, that doesn't properly display. I was still laughing minutes later.

To wit: Afterguffaw -

In other good news, DCAHNM just came on the radio. Naturally i will imagine Stevie's awesome Berkeley TP harmonies as the song goes through. Damn, everyone should have been at those shows. Sub-f*cking-blime. V-dog? You woulda died.

You obviously love what you do, so that, in itself, is a wonderful thing.

I understand what you are talking about in terms of feedback. When I had a 5pm - 10pm show, I loved to go out to clubs afterwards. When someone would say, "Hey Bruce, you were playing some awesome music earlier", or something like, "That was a great interview you had with Concrete Blonde", that always made my night. Cause sometimes you arent sure anyones listening, ya know?

Where are you, by the way? It's so strange to hear about drought - which is normally what we are in this time of year. Im in Texas and this is the first summer in decades where we have had rain. A LOT of rain. It's crazy.

i do enjoy the line of work, even if i get tired of the country radio station crap. it gives me the flexibility i require... dresscode, schedule, etc.

i'm in the eastern portion of tennessee, on the border with north carolina. in a valley of the appalachian mountains... the smokies.

we've been in a drought all year, really. we're 12 inches below total rainfall for the year. august's normal rainfall is 3.75 inches, we got .51 inch. no ****. the grass is crunchy.. some trees are already browning up and dropping leaves. it's quite sad.

i haven't been a DJ in a few years. it's not that i don't like it.. but i'm not a good faker. i'd like to DJ at a station that actually plays music i enjoy. i think it'd be rad to work for sirius... i am in LOVE with sirius satellite radio. <3
