Oh it is, big time. I think only about 26,000 people speak it on a daily basis now in the whole country.

It's compulsory to learn it right up through secondary school, though. I think it's a shame because the way it's taught is all wrong and being forced to learn it is definitely turning the young people against it.

It's a pity. I like the language but I hate learning it out of a book.

Oh yes. Get the right (or the wrong stuff depending on your point of view) and you are off on one.

It's banned in most countries including the States. The UK allows the less dangerous forms but the real deal contains all sorts of chemicals including a-thujone that, taken in any quantity, induces hallucinations in the same way LSD does. If you ever get the chance ( ), try the black 85% proof version, it's... interesting... And it tastes nice. Like anaseed. But be careful and don't drink it neat in quantity otherwise you end up seeing all kinds of ****! A very good friend of mine thought he could push his head through a wall.. The wall disagreed..

UK bars are only legally allowed to serve you one shot of the mild version. Thats how strong it is. Bars that sell it have to stamp your hand once you've had a shot. If you are not used to alcohol a single shot will get you rather drunk.. Now if you WANT to get drunk it's much cheaper than 8 or 10 beers!

Happy reading!

I dont speak Gaelic, but Im trying to learn, and its really tough because of the letter combinations and the certain letters that are silent (like "h") (for example you say TIN Lizzy NOT Thin Lizzy....) and other sounds that you dont realize you are supposed to make by looking at the letters....its weird.......like if you see an "si" together its a "sh" as in Sinn Fein
(pronounced Shin Fain) or Bann Si (did I spell that right?) is Banshee and certain combos like mb or mv (I cant remember!) is actually a particular sound ("V", I think)

But I know that Mo Chride is My Heart which is so cool........(actually Im not sure if that is the Scotts Gaelic or the Irish Gaelic....) ARRGH!

Congrats on learning the language properly! I've just picked up on some of it from friends and family. Technically it's Scotch-Irish, but certain families will lay claim to it differently...

Also, in regards to calling this religious holiday St. Paddy's Day...It may offend some Irish traditionalists. As the history of the word "Paddy" isn't a nice one. Americans took to calling all Irish "Paddy" when they began to arrive in large numbers in the middle of the 19th century. The term was far from complimentary, in many circles considered it was (is) considered derogatory. Unfortunately, many of the more raucous Irish developed a reputation for running afoul of the law and were hauled away in what was officially a "Police Patrol" vehicle but took on the name "paddy wagon". So, be careful when using the term...I know you don't mean it that way - BUT I slipped up at a gathering once AND I got it good!

You'll notice I didnt once use the term "Paddy Wagon" which I know is common when referring to lawbreakers....but for some reason, the Irish got an undeserved label. Because: the Irish especially revere the Law (Brehon) that was passed down from the druids....
