I'm sorry- I didn't see this until today. Let's see, as a patient volunteer, I do almost anything a family needs. I run errands, pick up prescriptions, fix dinner, feed the patient, read to the patient, SING with the patient (ohgod I'm a terrible singer), hang out with the family, help change (adult) diapers- you name it. You are assigned to a family, and then you stay with them until that patient dies. Hospice is free to anyone, and the medications cost under a dollar (we're talking morphine, ativan, all the good expensive stuff). The only paid employees are social workers, nurses, and administrative. Medicare provides almost all of Hospice's funding, along with charity fundraisers, etc.

I can call my chapter and ask them what they would do with our money. I'd prefer not to do that until I knew we were going to choose them.

That's very true.

Just bumping this up again so that whoever makes the final decision can let me know when to talk to my director at Hospice.

Looks like it, I guess now the only thing is deciding how we are gonna organize it right

Chris
Anyone can PM me (woo hoo- I may get a PM) and let me know if you all want to do it through my Hospice. By the way, I just met with my new patient last night. She's 93 and has breast cancer. She is adorable! I brought her some chocolate cake b/c her family said she loves sweets and isn't on a restricted diet. It's always a little awkward the first visit, but eventually the patient and family and volunteer all get used to each other and it's all good. My very first patient's family still keeps in contact with me
(I initially typed "my very first patient still keeps in contact with me"...wouldn't THAT be weird?) and the rest of her caregivers.
