Cool, I have to find me that live version then. If that's the case, I do think she remembered the rest quite well, but she just didn't want to go on.

Maybe she's only got it on vinyl, so there's even less of a chance she'd actually play it very often ) Sometimes it surprises me how fuzzy Stevie is on the details of her own career... she often flubs the years of her tours and album releases, but then she doesn't study and obsess over that stuff like we do.

The idea that she would have deliberately stopped so as to not take the focus off of Lindsey doesn't really make sense to me... Stevie shines on that song, but if anything he shines far more. She may have written it, but I think Lindsey owns that song. He sings most of the melody and plays that killer guitar. Stevie essentially just sings backup on it, except for the one verse.

I think it's possible she really doesn't remember. Long nets of white, etc . But, I agree... it's more likely that she just didn't want to do it spontaneously.
The guitar part at the end is a personal fave of mine. It also reminds me just a bit of The Chain ( a glimpse of things to come).
Just the way she said it, her body language, etc. told me that Ms. Nicks was telling one of her little fibs.

She sings it at home, alone...at her piano....just like all of her other songs.

I don't think it's Fritz, strand. I think it's Fleetwood Mac in 1975 (the two live recordings going around).

As far as doing this majorly orchestrated song off the cuff right there in front of a camera . . . come on! No way. Stevie doesn't remember words, Lindsey doesn't remember guitar arrangements, & the rest of the band probably doesn't even know the chord progression.

I think it was just a fun little moment, spurred by a card-carrying member of the RIAA with a belligerent streak.

I mean, these two sat there with Mark & Brian at the KLOS studios not very long ago, & Mark & Brian asked them to play stuff, & these two just sat there, unable to think of anything to play & sing together except for the stuff they had been doing on tour all year: Big Love & Never Going Back Again.

In one sense, I was just flabbergasted: these two had been singing & playing together professionally for about thirty years at that point, & couldn't perform anything simply & off the cuff?!

In another, I wasn't surprised at all. Buckingham & Nicks -- "we'll play for you IF it's a song we're doing on tour this year anyway."

Sheryl Crow & others (Michael Stipe, etc.) used to say, when hanging out with Lindsey, how he could just play anything, & I always used to wonder just how they'd know, since I couldn't imagine Mr. Anal actually just jamming with other people in the room.

They (Stevie & Lindsey) are just both really bizarre people: she's been playing the piano for thirty or forty years, & plays at exactly the same level today as she did thirty years ago (which is probably a medical phenomenon), & he's been playing guitar for about fifty years, & can't think of anything to play during a casual interview at a radio station. Extremely bizarre. . . .

Case in point: Don't Let Me Down Again from the Madison show May 2004. And they'd rehearsed that.

It reminds me of the Sara snippet from Storytellers. I listen to that, and I'm just like "What the hell are you playing, crazy woman?" You'd think she'd know the notes/lyrics.

He may have been up for it vocally, but there was no way he was going to be able to play that song on his guitar. He's said before it's a "Weird tuning" and that's why they dropped it. You'll notice he kind of touches his guitar as if he's trying to figure out how to accompany her but not quite sure. He might have figured something out but it would have been difficult, a strum he can only hope is on key.

The lines she sung were not the melody of the song. That was Lindsey's verse so I'm not surprised she remembers a harmony-line type. But considering Stevie sometimes gets confused on what verses to sing on regulars like Stand Back and Rhiannon, I Wouldn't be surprised if she got paranoid about doing the whole thing. Remember the fiasco where she tried to do It's Only Love with Sheryl impromptu, and that was something she had just recorded!

That said, I do think that even if she had been confident about the lyrics, she might not have been confident about pulling off the vocal. Understandable, considering her reduced range. As much as we would have loved her to do it, I can't condemn her for choosing not to.

It sounded like the melody to me? In that part of the song, there is no harmony - just LB? LA Nicks joins in with "go forward"

As a BuckinghamNicks-ologist, I can assure you it is not the melody. It's weird, because in the audience I thought it was. Then, listening to it on the tape, I realize it's not. Funny how the mind plays tricks!

I played it on my piano She is not belting it like LB did and the timing is not the same as the original. But, she is singing the melody. But, to each their own.
