I think it is derived from the action of the mandible closing by moving upward and thus the talking - or writing in the intransitive sense - will cease. But, as long as the desired effect is achieved - that one indeeds shuts the fu*k up - who cares

I had a BLAST when they were here in Atlanta in '96 and I was in Athens last year. I like stuff like that though
