It's because I grew up in OC... SoCali is where all the sh*t happens, man. Too bad I left. Ya... I'll always remember that about TP. I saw 'em live for the first time here in town a few years ago. When they were playing American Girl... the album, that guy, the van, the 8 track... big flashback. When I see him on talk shows... gawd he was such a geeky looking guy on that album cover, now he's just an older geeky looking guy. But he is sooo cool... isn't he?

When you imagine people and their friends... I can sooo see Stevie and Tom as being great friends for years. I loved the "dealing with girls" part. Can you picture that in your mind? I can.

That's interesting, because I had heard rumors that Stevie recognized how personal the song was and said she couldn't sing it. Guess not.

Do we know what this song is?
I wish we had gotten the full scoop on "Don't Come Around Here No More" as well since that story probably has more drama. What with Stevie's petulant attitude towards Tom recording the song.

Just out of curiosity, are there any LB mentions in the book? I know they've only worked together twice (She's the One and The Last DJ), but their collaboration has always fascinated me much more than TP and SN. Those two guys are so totally different. On one hand you have the eccentric introverted genius freak and on the other you have the much more laid back old redneck (not my words, he's described himself as a redneck). Mind you, both of them epitomize cool in their own way (and I've been a Petty fan far longer than I've been an LB fan) but they're just so different. And while SN and TP's voices harmonize well, LB and TP... don't. As much as I love "Walls" and "The Man Who Loves Women" they still sound a bit odd to me. But I'm starting to ramble now so I'll stop.

Thanks for transcribing! I love Tom and I can hardly wait to read the book now. What did Tom say later in the book about Insider and why he kept it?

So Iovine brought Stewart to the States, and he and Petty wrote "Don't Come Around Here No More" -- though apparently still nothing materialized for Stevie!
If you read the book that comes with Petty's boxed set, it says that Stevie "balked" at recording Don't Come Around Here No More and that her and Dave Stewart didn't get along.

Thanks for the transcription! I'll have to get this book since I'm a huge Petty fan.

Thanks for the long transcription! I love it - especially the Cecil B. De Mille line. Hilarious. That? would make a great signature...

I love and adore Tom Petty. I would love to see Stevie and Tom do a joint tour next summer. After Lindsey, I think Tom is the voice she just melts with the best. She wraps her voice around Lindsey's like no one else, but the partnering of her voice and Tom's is just as heavenly.

The Insider is such a beautiful song. I would cry when I listen to it, but I have a heart of stone!

My heart is made of mush, encased in a crunchy shell (like a Dove ice cream bar. I want ice cream now...)

Ooops - anyway - Insider has made me cry. I love everything about it - their voices together, the music, the lyrics.

Me, too. Except the crunchy shell has nuts....mmmmm, nuts...
anyway, Insider is my most fave, made my cry lots of times, just from the beauty.
Thanks for posting that, I like how Tom answered "She's incredible" When the guy talked about her harmonies. It's just exactly what I think.
Hi, Paula! One more day.....

WOW!
I am a huge TP fan and have been since the YOU'RE GONNA GET IT release.
The admiration that Tom and Stevie have for each other is so sincere -- and the magic they create together truly is something money can't buy. It's one of my wishes that they find a project to do together...

When can I buy this book??!!
