I think it's sad that she feels this way. I mean, even if Klonopin ruined her I still think she produced a lot of good stuff during this time. If she really thought that there was "nothing" memorable from this time period, why did she include pieces of it on her box set?

I like ALL that Stevie has to offer, not just Rumours and BellaDonna.

Well, I think what she's saying is that when you put her work from '86-'93 up against her earlier work, it paled in comparison. And it does. Sister Honey doesn't compare to Edge of Seventeen, Listen To the Rain doesn't stack up with Sable On Blonde, Fire Burning doesn't match up with Storms quality-wise. Not everything was bad, but everything wasn't what it could've been.

You have to put yourself in Stevie's place. She's probably viewing it as 'Here I am, a songwriter who wrote masterpieces like Sara and Gold Dust Woman who degenerated into writing songs like WTTR...S and Love Is Like A River. Something was wrong.' While us fans might like such mediocre songs, the person who is going through the hardships and writing the songs may feel sad and discouraged because they know they could write better under different circumstances.

Just some thoughts.

I was going to post this very thing. Stevie wrote some very good songs in this period, and I was suspicious when they were absent from her last solo tour set. I had the feeling she felt this way before she gave that interview.

Good lord! That guy was getting all the action. He must have been a real "ladykiller", either that or there must not have been a lot of variety on the road!

i was a little shocked at this article. maybe it's Stevie's hormones out of whack but i remember she always had the attitude that if she could change anything in her life she wouldn't change one single thing. and she said this only a few years back on the fanatic show so it was after ALL the drugs....she said it's what made you what you are today - all the good and bad stuff....

now, she seems to be having regrets which is not the norm for her. maybe it just caught up with her. i think she's feeling the pressure of getting older especially at this time and now she realizes she "lost" 8 or 10 years and she "needs" that time now. i feel bad for her that she's feeling this way but i can completely understand and sympathize. I'm 33 and have recently returned to school (should be done in 2005...when i'm 35!) and i wasted 10 years doing absolutely nothing....i really don't know what i did...in a way it's ok cause i wasn't settled in my 20's and everything was new to me and a learning experience. however, you reach a certain age and you realize how fast time is going by and you better start doing something before your whole life becomes one big regret! youth is wasted on the young! anyway, so i look at my 20's as being my "lost" period. unfortunately, i can't attribute drugs (well, somewhat) to this "wasted" time.

i hope stevie gets out of this menopause thing soon. my mom (55 too) said she started going through it in January and didn't get her monthly visitor for 9 months and then suddenly it was back. i heard some women go through it for years. that's horrible.

I hope Stevie doesnt dwell on it though... I mean, you cant turn back the clock. I can relate and understand to "time lost" feelings, but Im also in my early 30's and know Ive lived (hopefully) 1/3 of my life at this point. Maybe 1/4 if Im dang lucky. So, I still have a ways to go. Stevie could have only passed her 1/2 mark... so she should bide her time thru the menopause and re-discover herself once more.

This overlaps a lot with the "Stevie's songwriting" thread, but I'll post it here anyway.
I agree it is a little sad that she puts down all her songs from 1986-1993 in that way, and, like gypsysara, I hope she doesn't dwell on this too much. After all, her body of work as a whole is magnificent, and she should be very proud of all she's accomplished.
But I also think she's just being realistic about those few years.
First of all, she wrote very little during that period, and most of what she did write was co-written... which, as I've argued before, reflects that she was feeling very uninspired in general. Remember, this is a woman who once wrote (and has now returned to writing) most of her songs on her own.
IMO, the only songs from that era that really hold up to her earlier work are "Seven Wonders" and "Rooms on Fire." She had minimal input in the former and somewhat more in the latter (though I suspect Rick Nowels wrote most of the music). There's some other pleasant stuff in there, for sure, but for me and apparently for her, it just doesn't have the magic of her 1970s and early 1980s work.
Here's the ultimate test: How much do you listen to Behind the Mask and Street Angel compared with, say, Tusk and Bella Donna?

Also, she has said that the songs for "The Other Side of the Mirror" were pretty much written prior to the onset of the Klonpin haze and that she really likes that particular record, is proud of the songs, etc. So, that really just leaves the Timespace stuff (she wrote only one) and the S.A. stuff some of which was written years before 1992-93. So, all in all, we are talking about only six to eight songs.

Strandinthewind is right. I don't think Stevie is really referring to her output of albums as much as she is referring to the fact that she didn't really write anything from 87 to 94, and that's why she didn't do "anything memorable" for those seven or eight years. Plus, I think she realizes now that her performances weren't up to her standard.

I don't think she's referring to the lyrics that she wrote or the music that she wrote necessarily, while I do think she does in some cases. I think she's referring to the end product and the quality of the stuff she put out. It didn't compare with her earlier stuff. I mean, look at Street Angel. Everyone can swear up and down how it isn't as bad as Stevie thinks, but it is. Why? Becuase it was NOT a Stevie Nicks album!! Half the songs were written by other people, the others were almost all outtakes from previous albums. It was uncreative and un-Stevie, IMO.

ALthough I like Street Angel, I do think that in this time period (BTM, Timespace, S.A.), she also began using in her words "incredible" musical tracks that she bought from Heartbreaker Mike Cambell (sp.?). She would sing her songs to them. I never cared for almost all of those musical tracks and found them somewhat generic. Desert Angel is a good example of this IMO.
