My first Stevie memory is when I was about 10 years old and my parents finally got cable tv. I was so excited to be able to watch MTV and VH1 that that was about all I did. I very vividly remember seeing the "Little Lies" video over and over again and wondering why were there two blond haired women in the group and who were they.

At 15 (in 1995), I was curious about hearing as much music as possible when I randomely checked out the white album from the library. They had me from "Monday morning you sure looked fine...", but Stevie drew me in most of all. I was blown away and instantly knew I wanted to hear everything she had ever done and that this was not going to be a fleeting thing. I had never heard anyone who made me FEEL so deeply or expressed emotion in a way that I found so understandable. Her voice IS her emotions...it has never sounded "bad", but has been a mirror of what she was going through. I could never find words to explain what her lyrics mean to me, yet she can sing "ooooh" in a certain way and make me cry (or smile). So the first photo I ever knowingly saw of her/FM was that great, grainy bathroom shot on the back cover. A local video store had Tusk Documentary and In Concert, so my very first time seeing Stevie on stage was THAT Sisters Of The Moon. What can I say? Life has literally never been the same since.

Umm...I guess you could say I was kind of late-comer to Stevie Nicks fandom.
I only vaguely knew who she was until around 1999 (after the Enchanted box set came out). Before that, I had grown up hearing "Gypsy" and "Sara" on the radio, and I knew who Fleetwood Mac was, but I don't think I ever knew any of their names. I was aware of The Dance reunion and remember hearing "Silver Springs" and "Landslide" on the radio around that time, and I kind of knew who she was then. The first picture I remember seeing of her was a pic of the "Rooms on Fire" single in one of those Billboard Top 40 books while I was browsing in a bookstore. I think that was around 1996 or so, and I remember thinking that she was one of those '80s "hair metal" women, like Lita Ford. Anyway...I really became aware of who she was (and became a total fan at the same time) when VH-1 started doing all that promotional stuff for the Enchanted box set and tour. I think that's when they first showed her "Behind the Music" and "Storytellers" episodes. I went out and bought The Dance and Bella Donna, and waited in anticipation for Trouble in Shangri-La to come out (I think they were talking about that one for about 2 years before they finallly released it...same way with Say You Will). |

I had strict parents (who I totally love and don't resent, BTW!) who wouldn't allow me to watch MTV until I was 13 (in Dec. of 1987). One of the first videos I saw was Little Lies. I admit at the time I got Stevie and Chris confused, and I had no concept of the greatness that was FM - its history or anything else about it, really. But that was the first time I saw Stevie.
Pretty anti-climactic after some of you guys' stories, lol. |

I have no idea how old I was, very very early memory, but I just remember the Gypsy video (odd since I was born in 1982), but I remember seeing her walking through the enchanted forrest and ever since any time I heard that song I would have that picture in my mind, I didn't realize why until this year when I watched BTM and saw a clip of it along with some clips on VH1s greatest. I was way to into Madonna in the 80s to take much notice of Stevie or FM except to know that Gypsy was one of my favorite songs to dance around my room to. I also vaguely remember her RAL album cover since my mom played it in her car. In fact only now looking back do I realize how often FM was in my life and I just didn't know it, when the Dance came out I rediscovered FM after laughing through LB's My Little Demon and deciding that FM had done more then Gypsy (gee duh!). After going to my first FM concert in oakland I am now a diehard FM fan, just wish I had "discovered" them sooner. And as for Stevie her songs have a special place in my more adult life, they have always seemed to find me when I really needed them, Sweet Girl, Rhiannon, Edge of 17, Silver Springs, Beautiful Child, Destiny Rules, If Anyone Falls, and Sometimes it's a Bitch...

My first Stevie memory was seeing her in the "Hold Me" video as a toddler. My parents stuck me in front of MTV at a young age and it was actually a huge factor into why I was able to read at 2 1/2. I know that sounds crazy but it's true. So I remember a lot of the old videos. Of course I don't remember like the premiere of "Hold Me" or anything~ I was only a year old when Mirage came out~ but I do remember seeing it at a very young age. I remember the red dress in the desert very distinctly.

The first time I remember seeing Stevie, or Fleetwood Mac, for that matter, was when TITN was released. I was about 2 yrs old, and I played the heck out of my little cassette, which was played in my little Fisher Price tape player, of course
. Anyways, my two older sisters would always end up taking the TITN tape away because I played it wayyyyy too often for them...... so I would proceed to cry until they showed me pictures of the band.... I was especially fond of Stevie, I thought she was pretty . Eventually I misplaced my TITN tape, I grew up listening to :shudders: NKOTB, Spice Girls, etc .... that is until 1997. I was watching TV with my parents when my dad switched over to VH-1, he was amazed that Fleetwood Mac had reunited.... I, on the other hand was less than amused..... I was 11 almost 12 at the time, extremely snotty/bratty, etc... and when a close-up of Stevie came on the screen I said "She's fat...." ( to this day, I cannot believe I ever said that!!) And when my dad told me what little knowledge he had about Stevie and Lindsey's relationship, and as I saw Stevie looking at Lindsey, and singing directly AT him... I was like "whoa, she needs to get over it..... move on, whatever"..(Look at me now, lol, total Stevie/Lindsey romantic, ) One thing is for sure, the music did affect me, The Dance concert on VH-1 did affect me (although I would have never admitted it at the time)..... from that day on I stole my dad's copy of Rumours, and really never looked back..... there was some sort of connection I found with FM.... And, I eventually found the "missing" Tango tape, stashed away in some forgotten dresser (gee, thanks sisters!!) Lydia ![]()

After reading how young some of you are I have one thing to say:
GOD, I FEEL OLD! Oh well, just goes to show you that good music is timeless and ageless and that we all agree how much we love our FM & Stevie! |

I'm starting to feel positively decrepit!
The first time I saw Stevie was on the Rumours cover, but that's not the one I recall making the most impact. I do, however distinctly remember this: 1978 - I was 15 and had this friend whose parents were divorced (*gasp!*, so scandalous!) and her mother had sorta become the town trollop and didn't police the goings on at her house very well. Natch, myself, coming from very strict surroundings and wanting to rebel, would find excuses to spend time with said girl because we could get away with LOTS at her house. So, having given you the necessary background to set up this scene, I very clearly recall sitting cross-legged in a round, olive-green crushed-velvet swivel chair (honey, please! lol!) at this girl's house, drinking cherry vodka and Sprite (GAG!) and looking over and seeing a stack of Rolling Stone magazines. Oh goody! I am NEVER allowed to see these! On top is the "In Bed With Fleetwood Mac" cover. I think Stevie is cute as a bug and Lindsey is hot. Why aren't they lying together? I read the article and finished my drink while my friend talked on the phone to a guy who was in jail...... she was 15, he's was like, 24. I can now admit that I was hanging with some major trash, but hey, I was 15 and restless. What did I know? I'm telling you I could write a book about some of the people I know....... but anyway, I was hoplessly hooked after reading that article, and it was worth the restriction and grounding I got after that for being over there drinking cherry vodka and Sprite. I swear I still get that taste in my mouth when I see that cover! -Sharon
