If I had made this statement, Jason would be all up in my face.

Hehe. Half of those celebrity charities are just fronts to gain some good PR; the majority of them only end up donating 10-20% of all donations and eat up the rest in operating costs. Cher's chairty and Spielberg's charity are the really ridiculous ones.

I think charities that pay execs or celebs a fortune or have outrageous perks on the way to feed the indigent suck. Sadly, people realized that they could put on a $100,000 fashion show to raise $500,000 - so they do it. And, being the hypocrite I am, I go to these

You were all over me when I said the exact same thing.

I think the celebrities that make such demands and accept such extravagances are the worse than the charities that end up indulging them. They make me sick to stomach. Give them a fruit basket, not a Rolex.

If you're happy to feed into it, by all means, go ahead. :P

I totally see that point too.....and I think of that when I'm buying something like A Little House on the Prairie season on DVD...lol...really there must be something more worthwhile I could do with that money....like feed a homeless kid lol....

It's just something I think about - I was more thinking through my fingers - not making a statement that people shouldn't spend money on whatever they want ya know?

Just thinking out loud a little a guess

No, I think what I said was the charities realize that to make big money they have to spend it. That is the system. I do not like it though. I think people should give freely to honest charities. I do think though that corps. do it for the advertising and I do not have a huge prob. with that because that is not really a perk like a suite or a Rolex.

You told me that the celebrities (and the charities) realize that they're bringing lots of money into the charities, so you didn't see anything wrong with them getting such ridiculous rewards. I find it abhorrent for anyone to only participate in raising charitable funds when they get something in return. You would think that the satisfaction of helping out your fellow human beings would be the only thing they would need.

That's what I try to do...

I have a sort of inner dilema with all this - which is where I get confused with myself

See I figure I work hard and have been working non-stop since I was 16 - I'm trying to build a better life for myself that my mom had ya know? Therefore I should be able to buy whatever the hell I want....

BUT then I think of the homeless kids lol....I think too much - this is perhaps my problem....

Whatever though - usually my first train of thought wins out and I buy things for myself

Im not saying there arent lazy people or that everyone donates to red cross
(that bit of fluff over "pronoun trouble" isnt applicable) BUT: our tax dollars go to fill the coffers in DC which in turn contribute to the pot of aid relief. So, in a very REAL sense, WE all do contribute (except perhaps those on public assistance)

That may be the first important step on the path to wisdom, Deanna -- thinking about your actions & your deeds, as well as the actions & deeds of others. Can a life be well-lived if the question is never asked: Should I want what I do in fact want?

Imagine if people everywhere started seriously asking themselves that question. Programming would shrivel up & TV would go off the air (even PBS!); governments would topple as politicians found themselves in bread lines; & sales of computers, autos, hairdryers, magazines, DVDs, CDs, salad spinners, plastic plants, cell phones, designer furnishings, bottled water, swimming pools, speed boats & vacation homes would plummet!

The spirit of Epictetus lives yet.

If I said that - I misspoke. What I meant to say was that the system is in place and they are all playing in it. I think they should not do that, but I get why they do. I mean that Rolex was undoubtably donated so it is not like the charity is paying for it. Plus, I know this sounds awful, but having been on boards that have thrown huge high profile parties in Atlanta - people will not come unless you bait them. And - that includes both the public and the celebs. You have to have a silent auction and a big item raffle if you want to make any money. I think it sucks that it is like this, but having done it, I realize that is the reality - and it has been like that for the last 200 or so years that I can see.
