And... I never really cared for that song. Also, I never thought it should've been on Rumours. It was a B side for a reason.

The Rumours/carpark album version feels fast and frantic, as if they were trying to cram it into the album (which they were), or the tapes were sped up a bit.
By contrast, the Dance version feels languid and haunting, an appropriate tempo for the mournful lyrics.

Also, on the Rumours version, Stevie and Lindsey are pretty tinny and Stevie is harmonizing with herself half the time.
On the Dance dubs, the vocals are given more space to shine, especially Chris and Lindsey's deep and edgy harmonies.

The richer vocals and slower tempo all add up to a spine-tingling gravitas.

How they’ve never played it is beyond me. I think a real interesting way to piss Stephanie off would have been for BuckVie to have played it in 2017. They wouldn’t have even made it to the Classic shows before she would have lost her mind.

After 1978, I don’t think she could easily reach the high harmonies on it. But also, she appears to have projected her frustration with SS getting cut onto IDWK.

Sometimes when a singer is perfectly in tune it's fine.

But, when the authentic emotional presence is in a song.. the wavering of the pitch can give it that artistry of a masterpiece. There's no denying she did that in this performance.

I saw it in Cleveland and it was flat in more ways than one. So, kudos for that Burbank performance.

The Rumours version doesn't sound "sped up" at all.... it sounds like the country song it was, with a great build up and killer outro.

The Dance version is the one at the off tempo.... it was slowed significantly not least because Stevie couldn't sing it as fast (nor as high) as the original.

The recorded version is superior, because her lead vocals are so much more refined. The Dance grates on me because she's so SHOUTY right off the bat....and then how do you build tension from there? You have to get even SHOUTIER. It ruins the build-up effect if you start too loud right out of the gate. But by 1997 she couldn't do the softer, higher vocals of the opening of the original.

The loss of a lot of Lindsey's gorgeous, tinkly acoustic guitar from the original also changes The Dance version..... and leaves a noticeable gap. Though I will say his solo on The Dance is quite lovely layered over the rhythm section.

Since I knew and loved the Dance version first, it must have cast a spell on me.

Perhaps Stevie would have been more amenable to reviving IDWK for the Dance or later tours if she was allowed to do a slow and mournful de-countrified rendition?
