Now would seem like a good time for me to ironically quote Pink Floyd's In the Flesh again.

On the other hand, probably not.

So ya thought ya might like to go to the show.
To feel the warm thrill of confusion, that space cadet glow.
I got me some bad news for you, Sunshine.
Pink isn't well, he stayed back at the hotel,
And he sent us along as a surrugate band.
We're gonna find out where you fans really stand.
Are there any queers in the theatre tonight?
Get 'em up against the wall. -- 'Gainst the wall!
And that one in the spotlight, he don't look right to me.
Get him up against the wall. -- 'Gainst the wall!
And that one looks Jewish, and that one's a coon.
Who let all this riffraff into the room?
There's one smoking a joint, and another with spots!
If I had my way I'd have all of ya shot.

Because that certainly is the same or really less racist than HNY noting that a black girl from West Philly was at a FM concert and that the vast majority of FM concert goers are old and white

Do you people really have no perspective whatsoever?

On edit - it occurred to me that your use of "ironically" could mean you were not saying what I initially thought. So, if I misunderstood, I apologize and reassert the original post in general and not to you

yeah. and this leads to often cringe-worthy over-the-top praise about people who look particularly "ethnic." not that people who look ethnic aren't beautiful, blah blah blah, but that overcompensating, over-the-top sh*t gets under my (again, pasty and white) skin.

Quote:
For example, no one gets nearly as upset (if they get upset at all) when people refer to people as that "girl" over there, that "redneck" over there, that "old dude" over there, that "fat chick" over there,
I CAN HEAR YOU.

Quote:
those "queens" over there, etc. Moreover, if someone said "that Asian girl was grooving at the concert," no one would have batted an eye. Yet, when HNY referred to this girl as black, he was branded by some as a horrible racist.

HNY also referred to her as being from West Philly. However, I believe the girl told him where she was from etc. Upon learning this tidbit, those attacking HNY never apologized for being dead wrong about automatically assuming HNY assumed, in a racist manner, that she was from there. That speaks volumes

In the end, true racism (a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race/racial prejudice or discrimination) is a vile thing. I think we as individuals and as a society should all go out of our way to eradicate it - the sooner the better. Yet, I can assure you that the people on here that took offense at HNY's clearly non-racist comment will think that I am a horrible racist for even bringing this up; they will refuse to believe I mean the first and second sentences of this paragraph. That is an example of how ridiculous our society has become.

Also, I used the phrase "common black vernacular" or something like that awhile back in a conversation where that point was relevant. I got SLAMMED publicly and privately as a racist. To me, that is ridiculous because what I said was a fact. There is such a thing as ghetto speak or whatever. Black people refer to it constantly as "going all ghetto" etc. Yet, when I say it in the non-racist way that I did - all hell breaks loose. People could not see the forest for the trees.
oh, don't get me started on attitudes toward black english vernacular. people want to deny it exists as a separate entity from standard english because it's deemed racist to even bring it up due to the common notion that BEV is "stupid" english. but if you study it, it is a separate dialect with its own distinct syntax. a syntax, by the way, that is so different from standard english that ESL techniques are often (but not often enough) used when teaching young inner city kids.

in fact, there is evidence that supports the idea that BEV evolved from a pidgin created when slaves from west african countries were first brought to the US centuries ago. when a pidgin is created, the dominant language provides the syntax while the secondary language supplies the lexicon. this would explain why BEV syntax differs from standard english.

i told you not to get me started.

So, in the end, unless a white person praises a black person, they are better off not mentioning anything about race no matter how innocent. That is how absurd PC has become.

thus far, I've noticed many a reference in this thread to 'people' and 'everyone up in arms' over a statement in the other thread; in reviewing the other thread we got this:

soooo...'people' and 'everyone' would be Eric?

came across this today via myspace bulletin:
Why is it ok to make fun of fat people if you are fat, but not ok if you aren't? What sense does that make? If the idea of being called "fat" is hurtful to you then it should be hurtful no matter who it comes from. If it only hurts your feelings when a skinny person does it then it's just an artificial "hurt". You're just looking for a reason to be mad. A lot of times doing comedy I find that people are just getting mad because they feel something SHOULD make them mad and not because it actually does. **** artificial feelings! When something is rude it's rude, but if it doesn't bother you then don't pretend it does! If I make fun of a tollbooth worker that is fat it's because I don't like the tollbooth worker and being fat is one of their flaws. It doesn't mean I'm making fun of ALL fat people. Making fun of one person doesn't make me apathetic towards everybody.

and this today via aol:
Brad Garrett's 'Racist' Taunts: 'Wear the Turban!'
Brad Garrett ignited a new racial firestorm yesterday when the giant actor dropped some serious slurs at a paparazzo during a heated argument in the middle of the street. We don't know what set off the scuffle, but Garrett can be clearly heard saying, "Wear the turban! Wear the turban!" People had to restrain both Garrett and the photog from attacking each other, but eventually Brad got into his car and drove off. A rep for Garrett was not immediately available for comment. Him and the pap are yelling at each other and being held back BG says "IN ENGLISH" then repeats "WEAR THE TURBAN WEAR THE TURBAN" a couple of times.

how long until BG announces he's going to meet with muslim leaders so he can get to the bottom of his race issues?

Oh Good Lawd CHILD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do not really think that the BEV is a bad thing, there are many dialects in the US, etc. However, it is like the foreigners who move here and refuse to learn to speak passable English. That is their right, etc. However, if they want to get a job, get ahead, etc. - they need to learn how to communicate effectively with majority of the people. If someone hauls up into a job interview speaking ghetto that is hard to understand, they likely will lose that job to someone who speaks more mainstream English.

I know - poor Eric I think he misread the initial posting as as HNY assuming this black chick was from West Philly because she was black, etc. Now everyone seemingly is ganging up on him.

I think this thread is more general than that though that was the reference point of this thread.

oh, i don't disagree at all. however, learning problems start young with these kids if they are not taught to value standard english in the way you just described. too often, these kids fall by the wayside because inner city teachers are not properly trained or are just overwhelmed with their other giant responsibilities. and then these things snowball quickly.

sure...I guess I read this in the second post "I stumped as to why people were getting upset in the Philly thread" and then noticed 'people' and 'everyone' throughout; just sought clarification. thanks.
