Hey guys,
So I'm sitting here with iTunes open and making a new playlist on my iPod. I pushed no weird buttons, did nothing out of the ordinary and my iPod made this "beep" sound. Then the iPod screen went dark and it disappeared from iTunes. I turned it back on, and everything has been wiped clean somehow. I had about 1400 songs on it. Thats the beeyotch of it...and 300-400 songs were not from my CD collection. Lost forever. The BIG problem is I had my wedding playlist on it (it's coming up in 6 weeks). So...you see my dilemma. Is there anyone to restore this? I didnt have my songs backed on ITunes, so I suppose thats the A#1 problem. I've had this iPod for over 2 years and never seen this before. Its like it deleted everything ALL BY ITSELF. Weird. I want to break a window, or some other glass object I am so mad right now. I mean PISSED the F*CK off.

I have nothing to help with, but I know how frustrating it is... I'm sorry it happened to you. Especially with the wedding music and all.
My iPod took a **** on me about 8 months ago. I don't really care to get another one either. My stepdaughter plays hell with hers all the time. I think I'll get a Zune next time. Good luck, bud. I'd be pissed the f*ck off too.

Did you lose all your music in itunes? If so, they may let you redownload it. Awhile back my system crashed and I had to do a system recovery. Pain in the buttocks! I lost all my music, I had around 600 songs, I sent them an email explaining what happened. They put all my songs back under the "check for purchase" tab, I believe. Got to redownload them. Whew! They said they will let you do this once and to make sure and back up your tunes, otherwise, next time your just **** outta luck!
Feeling your pain...... ![]() |

Yeah you know that feeling you get when you wanna break something? Like a large, expensive, vase or something? Thats pretty much what happened. haha...its not the end of the world really...i still have my 600+ CD collection...but its extremely frustrating. Does Apple have a way to restore these things? It just seems ridiculous to me that the whole thing would mind wipe itself like that. Damn. Damn damn!

I'm confused. is your iPod or iTunes wiped clean?
if all of your music is actually still on your computer in the folders you haven't really lost it. check your music folders and if they're still there you should be able to fix this. |

I really don't know what to tell you
![]() iPods, I'm begining to think, aren't all theyre cracked up to be. Im on my THIRD one...and its being a bitch already, and i just got it for xmas. MLD...did you have ANY songs on itunes? if so they should all still be there. usually though, as Jazzy said, chances are the music files are on the computer somewhere if you downloaded them previously. check 'my computer' and 'music files' im sorry though, I really can't think of anything else that you could do. But heres something i found out from rolling stone mag actually, ipod liberators, theyre like 50 bucks, but they allow you to move your music library from your ipod to ANY computer you want. heres the website if ANYONE is interested. https://www.zeleksoftwarestore.com/ |

I purchased my first iPod last Thursday (01.17.08) and I have to say, I’m not that knocked out by it. I’m trying to get into it. I like the concept behind it. I think it’s cool that you can load up your iPod to mirror your iTunes library, but for me it’s a sound quality issue. The place I listen to music the most is in my car. I don’t use ear buds, I don’t enjoy music that way, even on a long trip (like on a train or plane). I have to be in my car and on the go. Anyway, I’m using a tape adapter, which is really the only other way to use an iPod in the car aside from the radio adapter thing (which totally sucks.) Most have said that a tape adapter is better than the FM radio adapter cuz at least you won’t get interference but even still, by no means is this better than listening to a CD or even a cassette tape, you lose so much quality. Even if I make a CD form iTunes using mp3s, even that sounds better. I just don’t understand why people would sacrifice quality over quantity. What good is it if the sound kind of sucks? In any event, I’m probably going to hold onto it. It could be good for long road trips. Some CDs I save as pure wav files (like the Mirage CD for example – the input level on that one is abysmal so imagine importing that as mp3 then importing that to iPod – YUCK), so some I save as wav files and I kick up on the volume a few notches in the “options” sections in my library and it’s not so bad. But it’s a lot of playing around with the settings just to get the music to sound halfway decent. Just put in a damn CD for pete’s sake – problem solved.

i get that, but i've played around with my settings enough to where it sounds good to my ears. Which doesn't have to be a lot and a little bit of quality lost sounds a helluva lot better than skipping CDs (from hitting a bump, or scratches) and nothing at all while you're fumbling to find another cd I have the tape adapter too. One of these days i'll have a new car where it has the ipod hookup. anyone have one of these? does it sound better that way?and I prefer listening to mine in the car vs. on my computer because my sound system in my car is miles better than my comp ever thought about being ![]() |

I wish I had some good advice for you, mylittledemon. Did everything get wiped out on your iPod, too? I'd say next time, if there is a next time, get a back-up external hard drive & back your whole computer hard drive up. I have one, in fact, I have to get it up & running again. I have Acronis True Image 10 software which will take a mirror image of your whole hard drive & back it up on an external hard drive.
I had a computer problem a few weeks ago. Come to find out, my motherboard went up on my emachine. (It's was about four years old.) I just decided to get my computer shop to just copy everything from my hard drive onto a new computer (their brand) including Windows XP. (I've heard nothing but bad things about Windows Vista.) Now I did have my hard drive backed up on my external hard drive, but I was afraid that they wouldn't get everything copied over to iTunes. They copied my files over, but said they couldn't copy my software due to licensing issues. So I had to copy the iTunes 7.5 on my computer. I was scared that my music wouldn't be there, but it was, but when I hooked my iPod back up, it didn't see it. I took my iPod off the base & it froze! It wouldn't turn on or off. I was panicking! I have a couple of iPod books, so I looked up what to do. It said to put the iPod on a power source & hold down the menu & play buttons together for about six seconds & it worked. Then I had to see why iTunes wouldn't recognize my iPod. There is a diagnotics test under Help in iTunes that helped me get it up & running. (Had to update the software for the iPod, too.) Anyway, I really like my iPod & this was the only trouble that I've ever had with it. Most of my music though is from my personal CD collection & any music that I download, I back up on a CD. I also listen in my car mostly using a FM transmitter. (I hate putting those things in my ears.) And the sound quality sucks, but what can you do. Eventually I'll get a new car with MP3 hook-up. So I would say next time, mylittledemon, that you should always back up your music on CDs and/or an external hard drive. And congrats on your upcoming wedding! ![]() Lee ![]() |

So, the car tape adapter with an iPod sounds noticeably worse than a car tape adapter with a portable CD player? I was thinking about getting an ipod soon (if I could afford one) mainly to use in my car to avoid all the transporting of CDs, changing discs, etc. But maybe not if the sound is that much worse

There are people that swear by their iPods - and as I mentioned in my post above, I like the concept BUT, I'm not willing to sacrifice quality just because I can load up my iPod with thousands of songs. It's actually a little overwhelming to have access to your entire library. I have found that it's just too much - I like making CDs, I'm all about the flow of the music. When I make a few CDs that I really like, I like just having those CDs at my hands, about 4 or 5 of them that I really like. Kind of like when you buy a new CD and it's so good that, it's the only one you listen to for a while, then you simply move on. Having your entire library at your hands is like having cable TV to me. How many times have we flipped thru all 400 channels of your cable system and there is not a damn thing on - it's just too much. But the main thing for me is the quality. Until the day comes that we are forced to buy music via online and only able to listen to it via an mp3 player, I'll stick with my much better sounding CDs. |

Sorry, I know we are drifting off topic, but Travis, it's more convenient to carry one little device versus all those CDs. I carry my iPod & my FM transmitter in my pocketbook. I don't have to worry about carrying my CDs around with me or leave them in the car & take a chance that they'll get damaged by the sun and/or heat & also take a chance that they'll get scratched (& this has happened to me). I have really good sounding Logitech speakers (which also will charge my iPod) at work. (And I also have speakers at home.) I can whip out my iPod when I get tired of listening to the radio. And say I want to listen to Fleetwood Mac, but I can't think of the album name. I just go under artists, Fleetwood Mac & it lists them all. And not only does it hold music, it holds quite a lot of pictures which is better than carrying a bunch of pictures in a wallet. I can make playlists. Everytime I go to a concert, I make a playlist of the songs played at the concert which I think is really cool. And yes, I could make a CD of them, but again, I don't want to carry a lot of CDs around. I also have a few videos on my iPod. I don't have my entire CD collection on my iPod, but I really like it. It's a nice little device that really suites me.

Hey Lee,
Trust me, I’m well aware I’m in the minority here. Again, I totally love the concept of the iPod but I can’t get past the sound quality issue I have. And it’s not my car player because my CDs and tapes sound great. It’s the connection, and for most of us out there, the only option is the tape or radio adapters. No matter how great your stereo may be, listening to your iPod in your car is not a true connection. Some are willing to sacrifice quality for quantity and I can’t, and believe me I tried because I really wanted to like it. I still have a couple of weeks before I decide if I want to return it and I just may give it another shot, but as I mentioned above, I find that I’m actually fooling around with the iPod more than I am the CDs. I can make a perfect flowing CD just to my liking – but there are times I may want to start with track 16 let us say, just cuz I’m feeling tracks 16-20 (they may be a bit more down tempo) and then the CD simply rolls back to the start – you can’t do that with an iPod, they don’t start over, therefore, I’m actually fooling around with the iPod more than I am the CD. Once the CD is done or if I want to hear something else, yes I have to fumble around a bit putting in another CD, however, the same goes with the iPod. If you want to play another play list for example, you still have to “fumble” around with it a bit to locate it. It really isn’t that much different. I have friends that actually pull over spending time looking for the play list they want to play before they find it – that’s what I mean by having access to so much of your library. When you make things too available, you find (or at least I do) I’m not as excited about it anymore – kind of like needy boyfriends ;-) Who said I was high maintenance? ![]() |
