If your father is a congressman, director of the CIA and Chairman of the RNC, then I'm thinking some strings can be pulled.

I agree - but surely there would be some direct evidence of the string pulling There always is.

But the same records also show that Bush may not have met the minimum-service requirement expected of most Guard members, according to National Guard officials. And after releasing the records, the White House press secretary, Scott McClellan, could not explain why, if Bush appeared for duty on the days listed in the documents, Bush's superiors wrote on May 2, 1973, that he had not been seen at his Houston air base for the previous 12 months. Boston Globe-Feb. 11th, 2004

You can read the entire article here:

The plot does continue to thicken. . . .

Here is a great article from MSNBC. It contains a timeline of W's service in the NG.

Interestingly, that Boston article contains quotes that indicate although the people thought W could have and should have done more time, they substantiate W's claim that he had enough time to fulfill what was required

Putting on my best Strandie hat:

"I cry foul. It was mostly liberal Democrats who voted in that poll. While I contend that he has many questions to answer about his service, I will not say he was AWOL. I'm too much of an optimistic believer. He used crack cocaine and drove drunk, but that's moot point. I'll be right back, I have to go register Republican."

Just joking, doll.

U.S. Military May Run Out Of Money
United Press International
February 11, 2004

WASHINGTON - The military will have no money to pay for the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for three months beginning Oct. 1 because the White House is declining to ask Congress for funding until December or January, well after the presidential election.

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Schoomaker told the Senate Armed Services Committee the $38 billion he has for 2004 war operations will last only until the end of September, as he spends $3.7 billion a month in Iraq and about $900 million a month in Afghanistan. The Army has about 114,000 soldiers in Iraq and roughly 10,000 in Afghanistan.

Way to support the military Georgie.

You know I wear only fashinable hats

Seriously, I am not saying W has answered adequately. I am just saying that this new evidence (the payroll stubs) does support that W was paid for performing this duty in the NG. Granted, the NG could have paid him erroneously - in other words, they could have thought he showed up but in reality he did not. But, that is a stretch in that it happened nultiple times and the NG agrees in other records that W fulfilled the required time. Again, the documents we have belie the proposition that W was AWOL. The only real evidence we have that W was AWOL in AL is that no one remembers him being there (at least in AL) and that report that indicated W was not there, which is suspect because apparently the times are different. Also, even some of the people that say they never saw him admit they were not there all of the time, etc.

So, I conclude that although the whole thing is fishy, the facts indicate this is far from a cut and dry case of "he's a deserter"
