My opinion of Stevie's lyrics might be a little different than some. It is this: Stevie studies Kabbalah and it is heavily cloaked in "codes". I believe Stevie uses code words often in her writing. That is why they don't make sense in plain language.

I believe she writes in code - her own. I don't think it's necessarily tied to the study of Kabbalah or any specific religion or philosophy.

They're Oscar Wilde's best poetic lines. Bluewhitefire.com (RIP) had a section of lyric allusions, and the majority of Rooms came from The Picture of Dorian Gray. I've been livetweeting my found lyrics from it. https://twitter.com/itsjusttheradio

Well, it was hauntingly familiar"

"Well, I see you doing
What I try to do for me"
When I think of Stevie's lyrics, I try to imagine looking at them on the page on the page she wrote them on. Edge is one of those songs where it barely looks good on paper. "Ooh baby ooh said ooh"? That's your chorus?

I love the line that comes before that, "I'm living on dreams and chains."

If this were before we knew the real lyrics to Secret Love, I would've said "my secret love secretly dies."

"I hear you got yourself a rich old lady / Rich old ladies don't last long." Can you not just see her swaggering up to Lindsey at a bar and propping her leg up on the stool next to him? Spittin' tobacco.

"Have you been experienced? Well if so, she says, experience it again." Well.

"Do you know what this is? No, I don't." Thanks for your help.

The whole dropping to the forest floor in Moonlight.

Oh I agree - it's her own code. But I think her study of Kabbalah is what encouraged the habit.

And being the opening line, it ruins the song for me.

Why Kabbalah, specifically? It's pretty recent that its been in been in vogue.

Actually the information is recent to me as well. I actually read it here but I don't know exactly where. It was an interview in which the writer discusses the books on the shelves behind her. I'm not specifically meaning the type of Kabbalah that is currently popular. Hermetic Qabbalah has been popular in the music industry for more than 40 yrs. Plus, she had significant exposure to a large number of Jews within the music industry as a whole. In fact, she lived with one for years. I do not see it as an oddity that she would study either Qabbalah or Kabbalah.

I study Kabbalah myself. I enjoy it very much.

Here is the link to the original article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/3...ors-story.html

"Stevie Nicks lives in a large, extremely beautiful house built in the 1930s in the American colonial style, situated in the hills behind Santa Monica. She is in a meeting when I arrive, and I am shown into the library - a wood-panelled room, the walls hung with pre-Raphaelite miniatures and tapestries. On the bookshelves are volumes about the Kabbalah, Madame Blavatsky and Arthurian legend; a copy of The Johns Hopkins Consumer Guide to Drugs sits beside Luxury Hotels of the World"

I'm surprised how many of the lyrics mentioned are ones I like or find totally innocuous. Different strokes...

Two that always land with a thud for me:

"Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?"

"Oh, it's so romantic! It's so soulful!"

The latter kind of kills "Italian Summer" for me. Show us, Stevie! Don't tell us.

.
I hear this whole song as a dialogue: (the him/her could be reversed, who knows!)

Him: Do you know what this is?

Her: No I don't. But whatever it is, it's very powerful.

Him: Have you felt this way before?

Her: Ohh, I thought I knew.

HIm: Do you know that I love you now?

Her: Oh yes I do.

(and because I can't resist):
Him: You know that I cannot stay
Her: Yes, I know
Him: It has nothing to do with you or with love
Her: Oh, yes it does
Him: Do not call or come around here, do not tell
Her: You know that I loved you then, Oh well...

you've left me ... Now pass the seasoning salt??? ..... what???
do you always trust your first initial feeling... aren't first and initial the SAME thing?

since it's lyrics that go clunk, i'm assuming it's also including how they're presented... so.....
(screaming thru a plugged nose) To the corner of her (BIIIIG FAAAAT) mouth
operation panty shield BA-GAAAAAWWWWK

at least Jane isn't sung through a plugged nose at the top of her lungs like (biiiig faaat) mouth Love Is... i will take the chimpanzee ANYDAY over Love Is

I miss Tiffany's site, too. The lyric allusions were the best part of it. I believe most of the content for that section came from Lisa's (Dark Angel) research.

"Kick It," which mitzo mentioned, is my favorite song from Street Angel. As some have mentioned, many of those words are from Wilde's short story "The Happy Prince."
