It's been a long dry Summer down here in the Heart of
Dixie. And if you're familiar with my other tales of creepy
crawly things, you know what happens to them if we cross
paths.
This particular snake deserves his own story. And in telling
it, you might think twice before considering attending one
of the Ledge parties at my casa.
I have seen less of these sometimes deadly creatures this
year than I can ever remember. All Summer long I have
not taken the life of one of these creatures. As a matter
of fact I can only remember seeing one far down the road
I mow. I had nothing to kill him with except the mower. And
I would have had trouble getting to him. Since he was a black
snake (non-poisonous) I let him go.
Just a few days ago I was mowing the lawn for hopefully one
of the last times this year. It's a big yard, about two and a half
acres. And while mowing the thought of snakes, or the lack there
of did enter my mind. It was a pleasing thought.
Tonight after getting a license tag for my new Silverado and other
sorts of things that necessitate a trip to Walmart. I made it back to
the house to devour six tacos and my favorite cran-grape drink.
And after flipping it back and forth between Fox News and CNN,
a bathroom break was in order.
I usually don't use many lights in the house. So I walk through the
dark kitchen then down the hall and open the door to the bathroom.
I flip on the light... and there it was! Crawling on the bathroom floor
was a snake! I close the door quickly, run to the utility room to find
something with a long handle on it. Run back down the hall with broom
in hand. Open the door to do battle.
The floor is marble tile, which I didn't want to break. Though believe
me I would have if necessary. With the broom I headed the snake
toward the closed glass doors of the shower. I didn't want him to get
in there because I was afraid he'd go down the drain and come back
later.
How did I kill him you ask? As I held him down with the bristles of the
broom. I took my sandal off, after making sure he didn't have much
striking distance. And with my jungle skills I struck. While I wouldn't
recommend using such weaponry to do battle with, it did the job.
There you have it. Take heed to these words of warning though.
Look around before you plop yourself down. You never know if
Nag might be waiting for you.

I mow with a 9mm between my legs....just sayin'.
I'll bet I hate snakes more than ANYONE.
