Cool Horror Movies

The month of October is a great time to watch TV since Horror movies are played on many channels all month. AMC is my favorite channel this month.

Favorites of mine:

Friday the 13th part 2 (first one with Jason)
Halloween of course
Halloween 3 - a great sci fi horror flick
The Exorcist
Jeepers Creepers
Nightmare on Elm street
Friday the 13th
The Mist
The Fog

Then the cheezy ones that are so bad they are good
Amityville Horror
Nightmare on Elm street part 2

And most sequels of any of them

My top are The Shining and The Sixth Sense. And if Jaws may be considered horror (it is according to Rotten Tomatoes), those will be my top three, I was 9 in 1975 so it was easy for me to end up horrified.

I was 7 when The Exorcist was released, so I couldn’t see it in the cinema; the horror effect gets somewhat lost when watching it on TV in the early 80s, but I love that film and consider it one of the best of its kind. A honorary member on my list.

Then other favorites are:

Misery (1990)
Poltergeist (1982)
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Alien (1979)
The Conjuring (2013)
The Towering Inferno (I was 9 too, it gave me a horror effect similar to that of Jaws).

The Blob (1958), Psycho (1960) and The Birds (1963) are three movies that for the reason I already mentioned, I include as honorary members.

The Birds is really good even though it never scared me. Misery is outstanding but I am in the minority and dont consider it horror. The Conjuring is also excellent. The Shining is also a classic.

Have you ever seen Sinister? That is the last movie that actually really scared me. It was on some channel a few years ago and I would not watch it again. Its really scary.
Poltergeist is a silly horror movie but its ok.

In the States some channels have so many movies back to back all month due to Halloween.
You dont like Halloween? Maybe in Peru they don't quite understand the holiday. That is a classic. Huge fan of John Carpenter who also wrote the music.

I was roughly the same age, and I blame this movie(and Kojak) for my fear of heights. People jumping or falling to their death(the Kojak episode had teen boys throwing an older lady doing laundry on the roof of her NYC building, to her death).
Children really shouldn't be allowed to watch this crap. I can trace my fear back to these shows.

We do "celebrate" Halloween, though not as much as in the States. Kids go out asking for candies, they say HALLOWEEEEN while knocking doors, not Trick or Treat. It’s a custom that’s dying out; when I was a kid, you’d see more children out on the streets on Halloween evening than today. There are indeed many costume parties. We latinos look for any excuse to go out dancing.

To be honest, I recently watched Halloween last year for the very first time; I’m not sure why I never had the chance to see it before—not even on TV. Same as the first Friday the 13th. I'm sure if I'd watched younger in the cinema the effect would have been different. By the way, the music is too similar to that of The Exorcist. It prompted me to look into it.

A very good question is What is horror and what is not. Checking websites with lists of best horror movies there are several that I'd ask Is that movie a horror film, or a suspense? In my experience when a film that doesn’t seem like horror makes me scream (and I rarely scream at the movies), I consider it horror. That happened to me with Misery.

Hollywood likes to milk a concept for all it’s worth for commercial gain, so some sequels are essentially rehashes. That’s why, for me, the Elm Street and Friday sequels are more about entertainment than horror.

I will look for Sinister.

Another good one is the Blair Witch Project. You rarely see it on TV these days though. People either love the movie or hate it. There is no in between. The making of the movie was incredible. There was no script and each of the actors would get note cards of discussions or fights they would have with the other cast. It was mostly all improvised which is why it seems so real. They really lived in the woods, were wet, cold, miserable and really starving.
