Default Lindsey B. - A "Postmodernist?"

Greetings all - haven't been able to post in quite some time; been at home taking care of my Mom. But, I had a question I'd like to ask! -

There's something I've been wondering about after watching the "Go Insane" vid. and listening often to the album Tusk -
Is it fair to say that Lindsey is a "Postmodernist?"
Does this sound right to anyone? Or wrong?
Or is it more like, "Where have YOU been!?"

Forgive me, but i have no idea in the world what that is !!!

It must be said, even the definition has not made things any clearer,

Postmodernism is a term applied to a wide-ranging set of developments in critical theory, philosophy, architecture, art, literature, and culture, which are generally characterized as either emerging from, in reaction to, or superseding, modernism.

Anyway I think David could be the very man to answer your question.

k thanks!
Yeah, it's weird stuff though!
For whatever it's worth, I just did a search on Google and couldn't find much; except one other person basically had the same question; and the same thing had occurred to that person.
I've heard that the photograph on the Tusk album cover was "Postmodern," for whatever that's worth.

I would say that many of the songs on Tusk were postcoital. And one of the songs--Beautiful Child--was post-Raisin Bran.

*snort*

I would say that most of Lindsey's songs were written in the middle of a long dry spell, but that's just me. I mean, c'mon ... he couldn't've been getting any when he wrote "Not That Funny"!

I think it's a spot on description. Lindsey is an art-rocker. He builds constructions using stereotypes from other times and styles. Ecclecticism and deconstruction belong to postmodern artists.Especially as a studioartist, he uses that. I'd call Law and order his most typical postmodern album.

I'd certainly say the Go Insane album and videos constitute Art Rock. In fact I would say Lindsey was a visionary in creating a conceptual style. He really kicked MTV into prime audience with the Go Insane video. It was almost an audio visual Picasso.. Many artists have copied his style since those early days of music television.

I think you're right when it comes to videos, but I just recently saw them for the first time. Back then MTV did not interest me. I remember the Miragevideo for Hold Me. A pretty clip that used alot of visual elements in the style of Rene Magritte and Dali. But my main focus was audio. So still, although Go insane was his highpoint as an art-rocker, I think L&O was the most ecclectic when it comes to his postmodern play with musical archetypes. It all started with his work on Tusk though.

In the early 20th century Picasso went through a period known as Analytical Cubism. Objects and images were basically deconstructed into their basic components. Here's an example called, ironically, "The Guitar Player" from around 1910.

This is to me as art what Lindsey is to music, especially his Tusk era.

Yeah.....like painting on canvas...

I knew what you meant when you mentioned Picasso. I studied arts. That's why I can relate to the typecasting of Lindsey as a postmodernist. Prince is one too. But his music is sh+t to my ears.....please don't pull this into a "he did a REAL george harrisoncover."-discussion. Slickness bleeds in my ears.

Prince is quite a visionary too. I've already given my opinion of Prince's Harrison cover in the other thread dude, I'm not going to repeat myself here. I do like a lot of his new album 3121. Its just unfortunate that the words "new album" and LB don't go together anymore...
