It looks like California has acne, according to the USGS Earthquake map.

David, what is the name of that town built right on the San Andreas fault, dubbed the Earthquake Capital? you can actually see the fault line from pics of the town streets.....pretty trippy

I found this from a search:
Quote:
Parkfield has a population of 37 people. It is known as the earthquake capital of California. Located on the San Andreas fault, six similar, magnitude 6.0 earthquakes have occurred on the San Andreas fault near the town with apparent regularity -- one approximately every 22 years.
Im sure there are other towns that claim to be the earthquake capital...
my mom was in the big one in Coalinga in the 80's she said it hit the building like a train and sounded like one too...she also was in the other one during the world series, the Loma Prieta earthquake....that one scared her pretty bad....

I found a pretty neat link

click on the interactive link on the left hand side for a neat slideshow on continental shift...as well as a map of serious US Earthquakes, types of faults
tectonic plates....pretty interesting!

{weaseling in...'xcuse me, pardon me, 'xcuse me, pardon me} I'll take the liberty of butting in and answering for David

It's San Bernardino. The multi-level freeway interchange between the I-10 & the I-215 freeways is directly on top of the San Andreas.

Yeah, Coalinga is one...but it is right near the San Andreas, too. You have to remember the San Andreas runs right through California from where it crosses the border from Mexico around Calexico/Mexicali all the way up to where it hits the coast about Monterey Bay, then makes a left turn into the Pacific Ocean just south of Eureka about 950 miles later.

Im a CA girl born and raised, so Im very VERY familiar w/San Andreas
but by Earthquake Capital, I think Parkfield is more accurate, because it has an earthquake approx every 20 years. It too is right on the fault. therefore, it gets the crown.

btw: I found another neat site

also: did you visit my other link? lotsa neat info there.....this subject fascinates me, as Im sure it does every Californian...

You guys have mentioned several areas that straddle faults. Other towns straddle faults, too, with visible signs of fault creep: Hollister has the Calaveras Fault running right through it (you can see some wild pictures here: http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/seg/hazard/...3_slides.shtml) & Hayward is skinned by the Hayward Fault. Even the Berkeley Memorial Stadium is apparently moving in a few different directions because of the Hayward Fault. There are homes in Hollister that are literally being pulled in two separate directions from Calaveras Fault creep.

So if you get out of bed one morning & reach for your slippers & find they are halfway across the room -- definitely not where you left them -- call FEMA!!

I started to post Hollister as the Earthquake Capital until I read that Parkfield has the greatest event number of all earthquake towns......as I said, on average every 20 or so years, which is pretty frequent for earthquake events.
SF has had two HUGE earthqauakes and so has the mountain community of Owens Valley......which is surprising because it is deep in the Sierra Nevada...at any rate, I believe Parkfield wears the crown due to its frequency. Luckily, there are very few people that live there. AND, various Universities have set up monitoring devices there making it the most closely monitored spot in CA as well.

this is a pic of parkfield
