Thumbs up "Say You Will" on the charts

This week in Billboard (July 19th):

SINGLE:
"Say You Will" moves up to #22 from #28 on Adult Contemporary (designated 'Greatest Gainer')
Moves up to #27 from #32 on Adult Top 40 (with a bullet)

ALBUM:
Down to #78 from #70, but finally certified gold

It's weird... SYW has more staying power than Madonna's American Life (now at #125, released a week after SYW), but she has been certified platinum and Mac are only gold. I guess she had a better first week.

The Certifiactions are kind of funny. American Life sold 240,000 copies in week one. Say You Will sold 220,000. So really no appreiciable difference. It can take months after an album has reached a milestone to actually be certified. No rhyme or reason. Another factor is Warner's shipped substanially more copies of American Life than Say You Will. Say You Will had sold 500,000 after its 5th week.

Madonna's album sunk like a stone. It may have shipped a million, but it hasn't sold a million. Dollars to doughnuts, SYW has sold more than her album!

I dont know if it European sales counts as far as RIAA certification, but Madonna's new Cd is doing very well in Europe...according to her website. I think its still in the top ten over there. But it has bombed the big one here in the states...I wonder if her new single "Hollywood" will boost it any

Its too bad that Fleetwood Mac's is not doing a little better, I was expecting @1 million by now, at this rate it is doing about what TISL sales did in the first 3 months, hopefully BOTH of these releases will go platinum by this years end!!!!

I really think they would have benefited some with doing a video with this new CD, I really think it would have garnered some play on VH1, even though that channel has gone downhill BIG TIME~

IF the SYW single continues to move up, there should be a spike in album sales...

Well the thing is, Madonna's album has actually now sold about 520,000 coppies but has Shipped 1 million. If you check out the stores there are quite a few copies of the CD still lining the shelves. Warner obviously thought the album was going to sell much better than it did but her fan base went out and bought it and that was it.

Say You Will I believe has sold more copies than American Life.

Either way, Madonna's album isn't very good compared to her bigger sellers. She's capable of better but this new one failed to grab an audience beyond her fan base.

Fleetwood Mac's on the other hand, without the radio and huge publicity Madonna had with AL, is still selling. Just goes to show a good album will sell itself.

Well, good timing has never been the Mac's strong spot. I mean, when will this documentary be released? Dollars to doughnuts, if they had premiered the doc on VH1 or MTV ala The Dance, the album would be platinum by now. Best band, worst timing.

Is there a video for SYW? Even a half-assed one like the one for Peacekeeper? If so, I haven't seen it yet.

As far as I know, there isn't a video for "Say You Will."
Since the band seems reluctant to take time out to do a "proper" video, I had thought WB should at least fashion a video for "Say You Will," out of the "making of" documentary footage that was filmed, but unfortunately the Eagles just did that with their new single.

And I know a lot of people don't feel videos are important, but they're still a necessary promotional tool.
Had the video for "Peacekeeper" actually been released sooner, it would have garnered more airplay on VH1... but again, they were a day late and a dollar short.

OMG, that song is horrid. The Eagles should quit while they're ahead.

Dissention, you are so right. Warmed-over R&B with a chorus like what you'd find on a Backstreet Boys album track.

I was actually embarrassed for them the first time I heard it.

It's at #9 on the AC chart right now, which makes me mad because that's better than "Peacekeeper" did. But it hasn't cracked either the Hot 100 or the Adult Top 40 yet (as PK did), so there is some justice in the world.
