In new radio documentary by Pete Paphides, Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham says "I would love to work with Stevie [Nicks] again"
Last week, BBC Radio 4 broadcast an episode of Pete Paphides' excellent Follow Up Albums series that told the story of Fleetwood Mac's Tusk, the legendarily fraught follow-up to their massive album Rumours, which spent 30 weeks at No. 1 in the US album chart. Tusk was the third album the band recorded with the legendary duo of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, who had been partners for years and split during their time in the band.

The documentary is great and well worth half an hour of your time - it's on iPlayer until tomorrow, when it's replaced by the next episode - but particularly interesting is the closing section, where Buckingham suggests that he would be keen to record again with Nicks.

When asked by Paphides if he would ever record with her again, he said: "I would love to record with Stevie again. It would be such a circular thing to come back to where you started, and I think it would be magical, because that subplot is so built into the history of Fleetwood Mac. So if you talk to her, put in a good word for me [laughs]. But you already talked to her I guess."


"I did," answers Paphides on the programme, "and she seemed to make all the right noises."

"Oh good - well I have written a bunch of songs," Buckingham replied, "and I do want her to hear them, and I hope that we do [work together again]."

When we spoke to Paphides, he confirmed that when he interviewed Nicks for the programme (in a section that was never broadcast), she had mentioned that Buckingham had been working on some new songs, seemingly with a view to record them together. He had been inspired to do so after the death of Nicks' mother, whom he had known since he and Nicks got together as teenagers. Nicks was apparently due to meet Buckingham the day after Paphides' interview took place. The interview, Paphides explained, was recorded by one of Nicks' staff, and when it was sent back to him that section had been deleted.

These are early and speculative noises, certainly. But if it did happen, it would be quite the comeback: their first Buckingham Nicks recording since their 1973 self-titled album (which was instrumental in them later joining Fleetwood Mac), making for a whopping near-40 year gap.

Rumours was number one for 31 weeks.I love the idea of Stevie and Lindsey collaborating on new music outside of Fleetwood Mac..plus seeing Mick cut out of the $ on a tour would be the icing on the cake.

Amid all of this talk about the aftermath of Barbara Nicks' passing, the impact on Lindsey has never come up. It's interesting that he was so moved... almost as if she was a mother-in-law of sorts. Perhaps this is related to what Stevie was intimating back in January about a tribute album to her mother. Could this be the catalyst to a simultaneous new BN album as well as a 40-year anniversary reissue of Buckingham Nicks in digital format? Will the Mayan calendar enable this? Will this be the fifth horse of the apocalypse??

Wow, yeah. I think Lindsey just is ready for BN anyway, death or not, Stevie did say that both of her parents adored Lindsey and in talking about AHI Barbara Nicks also said that after his own father died due to heart problems, Lindsey became closer to them. Now, by the time MB died, Lindsey and Stevie weren't even living near the Nicks' anymore, but whatever the time frame, I guess there was probably a point where Lindsey did hang around her parents' house a lot.

Stevie said her dad loved to hear their demos and Javier said that when they were in Fritz while Lindsey's mom would give them lemonade when he visited, Stevie's mom would ask the boys why they weren't in Vietnam, when they came round to get her daughter. The kids probably got on her nerves, but the way she went to Lindsey's concerts when he was in town when she was in her eighties, I gathered that she loved him. I mean, she'd go to a couple of concerts per tour, not just one obligatory appearance. For his part, I guess even aside from his affection for her, her passing just brings all these feelings of mortality out. He's in the next generation to go. I can see why the event would inspire someone to write songs. I bet Stevie has written a lot of poetry herself, lately.

If a Buckingham Nicks album is what it takes to get to another Mac album, I'm totally fine with that (I'm still a big fan of the McVie bass line, so I'm holding out hope for more Mac). But it sounds like Lindsey is saying it may be the final of all albums for them? Let's hope that's just romantic speculation from him.

Forget Karen. Why did Paphides let his subject control the only copy of the recording? That is some amateur-level journalisting -- no wonder it took him four months to schedule an interview with Lindsey.

Agreed. You wonder if that was a condition of the interview "we get final edit"? Still, agree it's poor journalism to allow that and/or to give the interviewee the only copy of the whole thing.

Just to be clear, I wasn't saying it was Karen, I was asking who the member of Stevie's team it might have been (hence the two question marks after her name). It could just as easily been her PR people or anyone else, or even Stevie herself.

whatever it is, he had better and more direct questions and received better (or at least somewhat different) responses from all of them than any other interviewer did for decades. so i will not complain about Paphides' methodology - it yielded results!

Please. Someone as high profile and who has been around as long as Stevie -- sure they control what gets out there. You've got to be able to use it for you and control it when it goes against you. It's a means to an end. I'd be more curious to see if the journalist ever works in this town again...

I know of stars asking for all sorts of control over the final product, and I know of journalists granting it -- but giving them control over the actual recording is a new one to me.

One thing that's curious to me -- according to Paphides, in the deleted bit Stevie said she was due to meet Lindsey the next day, and was aware of all the new songs he had written. But in the Lindsey interview, some time after that, Lindsey asks Paphides to put in a good word for him with Stevie, and says he wants her to hear his new songs. So what happened? Did they not meet? Did they meet, but not talk at all about the new songs or the possibility of recording together? Is Paphides bull****ting about what Stevie said in that deleted section of the recording? Was Stevie bull****ting about being due to meet Lindsey the next day? Was Lindsey bull****ting about her not having heard the songs? How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? The world may never know (because Karen deleted the part of the tape where Stevie told us).
