My iMac has thousands of Stevie songs on it and never gets slow. But I think most people have an external drive to save things. I also go through my Stevie songs and delete duplicate files of lesser quality sound, keeping only the best sound.

You can have all your music on a remote drive - you just have to tell iTunes where to find it in the preferences. The only drawback is that then you have to have the drive plugged in to listen. If you have a desktop computer, that's probably not a problem, but it can be a drag with a laptop.
