How Tango was born

This is why I think Tango is far more interesting of a story than Rumours. Especially once you consider how Lindsey made his exit from the band. I need to read Mick's book again, it's both enjoyable and illuminating.

Ain't no Street Of Dreams on Tango In The Night. I think Out Of The Cradle is more organic, though I may be focussing on the parts I happen to like more.

Agreed, 100%! Why the media (and the band itself for that matter) choose to gloss over this period is beyond me...

I read Mick's book for the first time when I was 13 yrs old, and even then remember thinking "Wow, she must really love being portrayed as an angry drunk!".

Maybe (about the band, not media), because in spite of the stormy/splitting couples time, they enjoyed recording Rumours far more than Tango, and memories are more bittersweet than bitter.

You're probably right. But considering they've never hesitated to capitalize on the Rumours drama, you'd think they would see the opportunity to milk a new (or at least different) cow...

If the band played up the Tango sage, the media would probably highlight (mainly, if not exclusively) the ugly Did-Lindsey-Really-Hit-Stevie-When-He-Abandoned-The-Band story. Not a pleasant thing to revisit. In the last 10 years, Stevie & Lindsey have both claimed that Mick lied about that scene in his book. I think they decided that Rumours is the safer subject to play up in most interviews.

Agreed. The sordid Tango drama is too messy and makes the band look too much like spoiled, sloppy rock stars who pretty much hated the sight of each other. Whether or not Mick was lying about the Stevie/Lindsey throw-down, well, who really knows? It may or may not have happened, but the mere mention of it as maybe having happened is an ugly issue that I'm sure the band would like to bury. They'd all probably like to bury a lot of what Mick said in that book. Actually, they probably wanted to bury MICK .

Yeah, Mick portrays Chris as a bit of a mean drunk, doesn't he? From the video footage I've seen of her it looks like she was more of a funny drunk, but then again, she did slap Lindsey after a show for kicking Stevie onstage. I wonder if she was drunk then? Get 'em Chris!

Well, Lindsey has said in several interviews that he did not enjoy working on Tango with the band because their reasons for making music had changed--ie: it was all for money now. The spirit of FM, Rumours, and Tusk had been replaced by calculation, a bid for big money.

I think Lindsey's read was, to some extent, accurate. Mick admitted the reason for pushing the album was to help him out of his bankruptcy. But another reason for recording it was to a make a more assertive statement than the band had done on Mirage, which none of the band were really all that happy with five years on. But Lindsey saw this as a swan song, a great, last triumph whereas the rest of the band considered it a return to the group format. There's an article on the band in Creem magazine from that time where Mick, Stevie and Christine are all optimistic about the future of the band and citing all sorts of future projects they'd like to do with Lindsey. And Lindsey's comments are quite to the contrary.

Hi! I don't know if someone asked for it before, but...why the name "Tango"?
I'm from Argentina, and as you know, the Tango here is just the "national music". I supposed Lindsey chose the name, but obviously I'm not sure.
Anyone know something about that?
