You'll be glad to know you can count me as another fan of Daryl Hall... one of the smoothest/most soulful voices in pop music. The big early 80's Hall & Oates songs were a big part of the soundtrack of my childhood... But that aside, I agree that Daryl is also a very talented songwriter/musician. His solo LPs "Sacred Songs" (with King Crimson's Robert Fripp) & "Three Hearts In The Happy Ending Machine" (partially produced/written with Dave Stewart) are among his better work IMO. As for his work with John Oates, I really recommend to those whom haven't heard their lesser-known material: the interesting Todd Rundgren-produced War Babies (from the mid-70's) & the late 90's gem Marigold Sky (one of my favorites!) They've collectively covered a lot of musical ground throughout their career.
I'm happy to know there's another Daryl fan and even happier to know you like War Babies (1974)! I love that album. Some people think it's sort of off-the-wall. I agree that it's something that people who heard Hall and Oates in the '80s wouldn't have expected from them!

Yeah it is a bit off-the-wall... but that's a big part of its charm for me... it's easily my favorite of their early albums. It's a shame it gets ignored when albums like H2O, Big Bam Boom & Private Eyes (great album!) will always be their biggest sellers or get the most attention, and will be identified as the "Hall & Oates sound"... H2O, in particular, actually disappointed me when I finally heard it since I always loved "Maneater", "One on One" & "Family Man" (Mike Oldfield's original version with Maggie Reilly is also equally cool!).

I agree that the fact that it's 'off the wall' gives War Babies its charm. It is a wonderful album, but I've had people listen to it and then look at me like 'What in the world was that?!' I wish H & O would have done another similar album. I guess the one most similar would actually be DH's solo Sacred Songs (1980).
When it comes to H2O, I see it as reasonably comparable to Voices and Private Eyes. Maybe I'm missing something!

Post Big H & O Fan here

Well, I've actually only seen Live from Daryl's House once, & that was when John Oates was on there. I really prefer them as a duo rather as their different solo acts. That's just me, but I am going to see John Oates playing solo in Wilmington, DE, in a couple weeks. Should be interesting seeing him without Daryl, well, it might be kind of weird for me, I don't know. I have all of John's solo CDs, but this last one, I just can't get into. His voice just doesn't sound like it normally does. I like the songs on it; it's sort of a blues CD (Mississippi Mile). Maybe he is trying to sound like a blues singer. I've really never gotten into any of Daryl's solo work. Now Hall & Oates music together, that's magic!

I like "Voices", but "Private Eyes" (to me) has some great album tracks that weren't hits (I do agree, it sounded a bit like a continuation of "Voices" though). "H2O" I expected to sound a lot more like those previous albums &/or reminiscent of the hits from the album... but it just didn't to me. The songs just fall flat I guess... the only songs I ended up still liking from the album were the hit tracks. And that's a very unusual occurrence for me. But, as we all know, music is a very subjective thing... I know it's considered a classic album by a lot of H&O fans.

Definitely some other songs from Private Eyes could have been hits. I love 'Unguarded Minute'. I also love 'Your Imagination'. It was a single, but not a top 10. H2O is pretty solid album. I thought most of it was good. 'Go Solo' and 'Open All Night' could easily have been hits. I certainly respect your opinion, though!!
So, what is your opinion of 1988's Ooh Yeah?

LOVE "Unguarded Minute" & "Your Imagination" (the "disco" remix is really nice too)... "Go Solo" & "Open All Night" are not bad tracks (and I agree, probably could have been singles), but they don't really stand out to me either. I had the same issue with Big Bam Boom... "Possession Obsession" & "Going Through The Motions" still have that H&O sound, but fail to really stick out at all. I do love "Out of Touch" & "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid" though... great, great tracks!

While not a favorite either, I actually like quite a few of the tracks on Ooh Yeah!...kind of a different sound for them. It has "Everything Your Heart Desires", which is a classic H&O track for me. 1990's Change Of Season is a different story... really disliked it when I first bought it (except for "So Close" which I always liked). It has grown on me a little, but still don't care too much for most of the tracks.

I guess despite my love for all of their 80's hits, that's not necessarily my favorite period for them album-wise. Marigold Sky was actually one of the first H&O albums that I heard all the way through (I think it was the second after their Rock 'N Soul Pt. 1 collection). That one really impressed me in that it felt modern for the time it came out yet maintained their classic sound... that may be a part of why it sticks out to me.

I really like 'Possession Obsession'. I feel that 'Goin' Through the Motions' could have been ok but drags on too long. For quite a few years, my favorite song by H&O was 'Out of Touch'. This is the song where I get a screenname that I use often in other forums(soulalonegirl). As in the lyric "We're soul alone, girl." (and also from DH's 1993 album). I don't think I can choose a favorite song at this point.

Concerning Ooh Yeah, it's good. Like you, it's not a favorite. 'Everything Your Heart Desires', 'Downtown Life', and 'Missed Opportunity' are great. I'm not sure exactly what changed with that album, but something was lacking. I still can't figure out what.

I'm with you on Change of Season. There's a few too many changes on that album! I do like 'So Close','Everywhere I Look' and 'I Aint Gonna Take It This Time'. They are standouts on an otherwise lacking album.

I was SO thrilled to hear about Marigold Sky! I was a member of the Rock and Soul International Fan Club, at the time. When I got the newsletter saying that a new album was on the way, I was astounded! I bought it the day it was released. Ironically, the next day, I heard 'Promise Aint Enough' on the radio while on the way to see Fleetwood Mac in concert (The Dance tour)!

& here's "Your Imagination"

& I have to share classic... "Maneater"!

A grade school friend of mine saw this video a long time ago (late 90's) and thought it was the funniest thing he had ever seen...he knew I liked them a lot, so he made a point to tell me he had seen it. He kept laughing at their moves, the finger-snapping & somewhat stark simplicity of the video (compared to today's videos). On rare occasion, he'll tease me with the finger-snapping thing to this day.

It took me quite a few years to find the video for 'Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid'! I love all of those great videos! As for your friend liking the 'Maneater' vid, I was even able to get my 8 year old son to like it!!

I love Live from Daryl's House! It's such a fun concept, Daryl just having people up to play songs and make food (like when Matt Nathanson helped make mozzarella cheese!). It has a kind of fly on the wall feel and it's also a little funny just because it does seem a little random at times but it's very entertaining and he's gotten a lot of awesome artists to visit and sing with him!

I somehow missed your post! There's been a couple of LFDH where John was there.

Episode 2 (Christmas)
http://www.livefromdarylshouse.com/c....html?ep_id=42

Episode 13
http://www.livefromdarylshouse.com/c....html?ep_id=32

I prefer them together, too. I hope they will eventually put out another album as a duo! I don't like Mississipi Mile as much as I've liked John's other solo work, but maybe it will grow on me. Be sure to tell us about the concert!!
