buckingham nicks - birmingham / janis joplin

howdy -
i remember back in the 70's reading something about Lindsey and Stevie and their connection to Birmingham. for some reason - i think they had a big following there and wondered if anyone could remind me what the story was.

also - this could be an urban myth - but i seem to remember hearing that buckingham nicks opened a show for janis joplin and jimi hendrix. anyone know if this is true or just a fantasy story

If these stories are fantasies, blame Stevie. She's mentioned these things in interviews before. Some of the associate interviews posted here at the Penguin mention them, too. I think the BN drummer talked about the big following down Birmingham way in the online interview posted here. Stevie's mentioned in several interviews that Fritz opened for Joplin and Hendrix. I think I remember seeing a handbill for the Joplin opening but I don't recall where I saw it. It's been a long time. With all the FM and Stevie myths out there, I think I can safely say these are NOT among them.

It was Fritz that opened for Janis (& Jimi...& just about every band that was on the "San Francisco scene" in those days)...prior to their forming "Buckingham Nicks".

The "Birmingham story" is that they'd already agreed to join Fleetwood Mac when a Buckingham Nicks gig (due to popular demand) was arranged for Birmingham...what became the FINAL "Buckingham Nicks" concert (at least, "to date"...anyone for speculation it might happen again?). They announced to the audience that they were joining Fleetwood Mac and from some eyewitness accounts the audience simultaneously made one of those Scooby-Doo "UH?" noises.

The handbill I saw was for Fritz, the high school/college era band that Stevie and Lindsey were in, not for BN. Joplin and Hendrix were both deceased in 1970, long before the BN album was released.
