Has anyone here read that damn Wide Sargasso Sea book? I can't get into it for the life of me. I think I'm gonna take an Adderall and sit down with it. And I loved Jane Eyre, btw.

Speaking of "Wide Saragasso Sea," that song PERFECTLY describes my life. I mean, down to the Britishman on a tropical island. I'm dead serious.

I'm trying to read it.

It's basically a prequel to Jane Eyre. It's about Bertha Mason (renamed Antoinette Cosway in WSS) and her relationship w/ Mr. Rochester before she went crazy and he locked her up in the attic.

I've read it three times--it's one of my favorite books. I went on to read a biography of Jean Rhys and a play about her, and take Caribbean History chiefly because of it.
When I found out Stevie was basing a song on WSS, I was probably giddy for two days. One of those moments of, "This is why I'm obsessed with this woman! And why I'm obsessed with this book!"
You really don't like it? Have you read up on Jean Rhys at all? That might help--her story and connection to Bertha are pretty incredible.
