Dates of Stevies SYW songs

Can someone break down for me which of Stevie's songs on the new album are new, and when the other ones were written?

Well, the really old ones are Smile At You (c. 1976), Goodbye Baby (c. 1976) and Running Through the Garden (c. 1985).

Stevie wrote Thrown Down for her TISL album, so that was written circa 1999.

Of course, Illume was written after 9/11.

I don't know about Say You Will, Silver Girl, Everybody Finds Out, or Destiny Rules.

I understand that she went home to Phoenix for Xmas 2001 and penned some new songs then for the album. Can't remember when I read this

Yes Pip, she did. Let me try this, because I know she had four new songs from that one month.

Smile at You '76
Goodbye Baby '76 (thought it was around '79, but not sure)
Running through the Garden '85

So, I believe the other four, Say You Will, Silver Girl, Everybody Finds Out, and Destiny Rules were the four songs she wrote during that month. I believe she said this information in her interview with Ryan Seacrest (? on last name). But I specifically remember her saying four songs, and they just flew right at her. These are the only four left, so they must be them. So, those four were written in '01/'02.

Do you think that Everybody Finds Out is the copyright song called In the Darkness???? Created in 1999? I am dying to know.

Well, Everybody Finds Out was co-written with Rick Nowels, so it wouldn't be one of the Phoenix ones. Does Stevie still work with him on her solo albums? Wasn't he one of her main collaborators in the 80s?

I think he wrote drum track for I Can't Wait & co-wrote Maybe Love w/Sandy Stewart.

These bits from an interview on www.performingsongwriter.com magazine give some detail on SYW and RTTG:

Say You Will
Everybody’s experienced it - when you like somebody, it makes you a different person. It changes you and it changes you in a minute. But that song is not just about Lindsey. It’s about a movie I saw about Arturo Sandoval, the trumpet player. I loved this movie, and I just loved the way that through all the pain and separation, they managed to do music and stay happy and keep love alive, and dancing and rhythm and music, how healing it was. That was really my inspiration for that song. The chorus was written first, then I went back to write the verses. It was initially inspired by that movie. But then once you get part of the poem down, you can’t always write all of it about what inspired it initially. You have to go back. You have this great chorus that basically says, “If you dance with me, you won’t be mad at me anymore. We can be in a huge argument, but if we put on some music and start to dance, everything will be great.� Then I had to think about what to make the verses about. So I went back over all my relationships with people and think of different ways that I have felt when I wanted basically to burst into song and sing that chorus (laughs). Give me one more chance. That’s what came out of it. It’s funny because, we just did an interview the day before yesterday, and I don’t think any of the band knows that that was the reason I wrote the song.

Running Through The Garden
I wrote that song around 1985. It’s about the story “Rapaccini’s Daughter� by Nathaniel Hawthorne. We didn’t realize it until it was completely recorded. I thought it was a Twilight Zone episode I’d seen on TV fifteen or twenty years ago. But it’s the story of this girl who’s raised in this beautiful Italian villa and her dad is this gardener and he raised all these poisonous plants and he like infused the poisons into her. It’s very hazy what I remember about the story. She became poisonous, so if anybody were to kiss her, they would die. And she could never leave, because she’s addicted to the poison. So everybody’s like, ‘Wow, that’s an incredible story.’ There’s a picture that Christine did, a drawing, and Chris is an incredible artist, probably twenty years ago, and she gave it to me, and it’s her, it’s the girl in the song. So I went back and forth about maybe calling it “Rapaccini’s Daughter,� but I thought I’d have to get publishing rights and all that, so I left it “Running Through The Garden.�

I think it's safe to assume that "In The Darkness" is really "Everybody Finds Out" (I had wondered about the line "when love starts out in the darkness," when the lyrics first leaked a couple weeks before the album was released, and then when I saw the liner notes and that Rick Nowels co-wrote it, that pretty much confirmed it for me).

So the "Phoenix Four" must be "Say You Will," "Silver Girl," "Destiny Rules," and "Illume."

Perhaps "Illume" was only a poem up until that time, and then she set it to a melody?

Yes, I think you're probably right, Johnny. One other possibility is that the last of the four new songs (in addition to "Say You Will," "Silver Girl" and "Destiny Rules") was not included on the album.

Stevie worked with Rick Nowels on TISL, esp. with "I Miss You", right?

I'm thinking EFO dates from the same period as TD, and it is about the same thing as TD.

So I agree with Johnny Stew that "Ill-loo-may" (I love to call it that, lol!) was not really a demo until until this last writng session in Phoenix.

She said something about the song "Get Back on the Plane" also about 9-11, but that it was way too depressing, so maybe that is why she decided to work up Ill-loo-may.

Destiny Rules is soooooooooo current for her and Lindsey.

You're right Johnny. I listened to that Q107 interview last night (it's posted on Tracy's site) and she specifically says that the four songs she wrote in February 2002 were Illume, Say You Will, Silver Girl & Destiny Rules.
