When I went to see R.E.M. on the Monster tour at the Forum in LA, I left right before the end of the show (mostly because I had awful nosebleed seats and there was no ventilation - the cigarette smoke was almost unbearable).
The next day I opened up the paper only to read that Lindsey joined the band on stage for the last few songs! Does anyone have any idea what songs these were and better yet - does anyone have a recording of this show? It didn't surprise me because I know FM are huge fans of R.E.M. (especially Christine) - it only disappointed me that I left a rather mediocre show from one of my favorite bands and missed my favorite guitar player on the planet. Oh Well. |

Really?!
Wow, I never knew they were fans, I wonder what songs Lindsey did too. That is so cool though. Are there any possibilities he sang/played backup on "The Great Beyond," "One Love" or "Man on The Moon?" Just some guesses. What does REM do for encours?

...is one of THE most elusive Lindsey tracks out there. Everyone wants it, but nobody seems to have it.

I think I remember seeing somewhere that one of the songs he did with them was "Everybody Hurts". Wow, I love that song
I don't know any of the other songs he would have done. That really stinks that you left before he came on! But, as you said, oh well. adam ![]()

Being a huge fan of both bands, I always found their admiration for each other really interesting. Lindsey and Peter Buck are actually pretty good friends, I think, and I remember back in 1996 there was word that Peter was going to be on some of the tracks on GOS. There was an article in Q magazine about it, but I don't think Peter's contributions were ever put to use.
REM's usual encores (at least from the tour I saw in 1999) are "Nightswimming", "Tongue", "Crush With Eyeliner", and they almost always end it all with "It's the End of the World As We Know It". |

I also have read that one of Peter Buck's influences was LB. I don't remember reading anything about him playing on any GOS tracks though. I did hear a short clip on REM doing a cover of Tusk. To see LB on stage with REM would've been great...

I remember reading an interview with Peter Buck and, I think his Wife, a few years ago. She was saying how much he loved Fleetwood Mac and then went on to say something to the effect of..."when Mick Fleetwood came from behind his drums and became a living drum kit that shouted 'Allah', you begin to see why Punk had to happen". Which I found pretty funny at the time.

Boy, I only wish Lindsey had shown up when I saw REM about eight or nine years ago. It was one of the most underwhelming live shows I've ever seen.

SOME REM fan out there HAS to have it. We bootlegged the Irvine Meadows show on that same tour, so Im sure someone, somewhere has it. No metal detectors @ the Forum either. I recommend combing on REM fan sites like this, or try tape trading websites like www.tapetrader.com.

I have a friend who is a major REM collector. If you tell me the date and venue, I can see if she has or can get the show.

Randomly looking through threads and came across this.
Wow- this would have been amazing! Who knew? (Apart from all those people that knew). To have seen Lindsey playing with REM…what I’d have given for that. A really great match. The songs he played doesn’t seem to have ever gotten confirmed. Anyone know? Is it out there on YT?
