The only stevie song on the new cd that I'm not too fond of is "Silver girl" and I just downloaded "Not Make Believe" and as different as the song is sound wise. I think it would have made a better choice to be on the album.
I loved even the Shangri-la demo version of the song but the SYW version just amazing and I would have liked to see it on the regular release of the cd instead of the limited edition. Also does anyone know where I can download the mp3 of love minus zero? |

I've actually really started to love Silver Girl, and to be honest I find the lyrics to Not Make Believe rather embarassing.

What do you mean by "embarrassing?"
I also agree that NMB should have been included instead of Silver Girl. Didn't Stevie say somewhere recently where they don't tell each other how to do their songs, etc....well, I think Lindsey should have told her where to put this song!! LOL Unless maybe he really likes it? I just can't get over how it got on the album! But...I haven't really listened to that particular song on me too much....the "million bucks" drives me crazy. |

Well, I like "Silver Girl"...and "Illume" is my least fav song on the album. Song doesn't make sense, how is it about 9/11 besides her singing "All of the trauma"?

A twelve year old writes in their journal about a river being "like" anything (Illume), and the kind of tired, obvious things that are mentioned in "NMB". Using phrases like "a thief on the night" and "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times"...how recycled are these lines? You would think after 54 years she would be able to come up with a NEW way of expressing common feelings. She CAN do it. When she doesn't, it makes me cringe. She's better than that. |

I like the production of the song, Silver Girl, but the lyrics...ooh..not that great. PLUS, knowing this is about Sheryl makes me feel ill. "She was a girlie girl"...Sheryl doesn't look or act like a girlie girl at all, IMO, plus, that's just NOT a good line anyways. I wish they had put Space Needle on instead of this song. I don't HATE it or DESPISE it or anything, I'm just disappointed in the lyrics.
Space Needle would have fit PERFECTLY in with the darkness of the album...and I LOVE Space Needle!!

that "Girlie Girl" in "Silver Girl" ranks up there with the lyric "the forgotten chimpanzee" from the song "Jane" from "Street Angel" as a plain goofy-assed lyric...lol...Brian J.

Not Make Believe is tops!! It's a travesty not so much that it's not on this album but that it's relegated to the limited edition thing... It should be at least on the next album. ![]()

Christy, you ROCK, and I totally agree with you one the production..I do love Sheryl, and that reference doesn't make me ill. But, the girlie girl thing. Ugh. Gimme a break. Sheryl is such a guy girl ! Even if you don't like her - she can sing, write, produce, play many instruments, and rock like nuts. How many women out there can boast her talents, even if you don't like her ? I don't want to get in a Sheryl debate, but so many people are rubbed the wrong way by her. The fact is, there are very few woman ROCKERS who have that many skills. Who are the women out there who rock at all today? I am sick as hell of looking at her - as sexy as I think she is - she is way too over exposed. But, who else is out there who can do so much ? IMO - she really got some incredible stuff out of Stevie. The falsetto on "Sorcerer" ? I would have put money down that I would never hear that voice again. And I LOVE "Space Needle". Why oh why was this not done ???? |

I'm with you on this tothegypsy. Whilst I don't yet love "Silver Girl", I've become rather fond of it and believe me, I didn't think this would be the case due to the sub-standard lyrics. They do, however, seem to make some kind of sense within the context of the actual music.
As for "Not Make Believe", I always despised this as a demo and while I concede that Lindsey's production is more persuasive, the lyrics are incredibly bad eg "It hurts my self-esteem" - that line alone is enough to induce vomiting and needless to say, is in my opinion, far worse than "girlie girl". I agree that "Space Needle" may have been a worthwhile inclusion but it too contained some cringeworthy lyrics ("We gotta get out of this place..." etc). If this song was to be seriously considered for release, it would need a major overhaul in terms of editing. |

I agree 100 percent. "Not Make Believe" is such a cool song. It has that Lindsey experimentation sound that I love. Kind of like the B-sides to TANGO. But my choice to go would be RTTG. I love Stevie, but her vocals on that song are everything that annoyed me about her in the mid 80's early 90's. Sorry

Silver Girl. It reminds me of a more vocally mature Real Tears.
NMB has this un-Stevie contemporary sound that reminds me of Love Changes, my least favorite track on TISL. And I agree that the lyrics are beneath her. As I posted recently, my best choice would have been Lady from the Mountain (or She Loves him Still). - Jake

I really think that "Silver Girl" IS a good song ("girlie-girl" lyric and all), but that they just missed the boat production-wise.
No, it would never be a "classic," but I think if they had gone with a more upbeat, lighthearted, quirkier kind of arrangement, the song would have been far more effective. I'm sure it would have been my least favorite of this particular batch of Stevie's songs either way, but I think it would have been better overall.

Just while I think of it, didn't Stevie comment that when she handed the "17 demos" to Lindsey prior to commencing the TISL Tour, only two of them were actually considerations for the TISL album? If so, those two would be "Thrown Down" and "Not Make Believe" which would mean that "Space Needle", "Annabel Lee" (my personal favourite - a FM song if ever there was one!) and "Have No Heart" were not even submitted.

Having said that, I do not mind and in fact rather like Silver Girl. My only "problem" (here I go again ) is the repetition of the same lyrics six or seven times at the end of the song (blah blah blah soul). I hate it when they do that. Its sort of like in the song SYW, where we have the great first two happy stanzas and then they repeat the chorus like eight times. What is up with that. Couldn't she have come up with one more section of happy lyrics ![]() |
