Well--it's not that it's that bad of a song, actually. It's just...trying to take it seriously is hard for me, ha. Yes, it is sad that monkeys and stuff are used for testing and held captive, but....STEVIE singing a song about it??? Our lil poet? It's hard stuff....

She should just scrap this whole project and put out a greatest hits LP. Its almost been three years since we got a new version of Landslide!!! QUOTE] Quote:

Awwwww, people really dislike Fire Burning! I really think I'm the only one who likes it. It's simple but fun but yes, I can understand how it can grate on you all! 3 years since a new version of Landslide - hahahaha!! If I hear one more new verswion of that song I'll get angry, and you wouldn't like me when I'm angry... I love Rick Nowels!! Then again, I'm a big Belinda Carlisle fan so that explains that one! Belinda rules, she ain't no dance music bimbo! Jane is truly appalling. It's one of the reasons why Stevie's Behind The Music isn't that great. The one song they keep playing over and over again is Jane!! Why??

I also am fond of Fire Burning - it's a great little, rollicking ditty. A melodic, spirited song, the likes of which we desperately need with the dearth of original compositions from our little girl. Where is our feisty little princess?
I'm fine with Rick Nowels and hope he continues to write with Stevie. Belinda Carlisle is a goddess and her work with Rick, particularly the Live Your Life album, is fantastic pop. Rick's sense of melody can not be disputed and Stevie's often dark, introspective lyrics are a nice counter balance to his pop sensibilities. Keep 'em coming I say. |

I actually love all of TOSOTM. I know this will put me in a very small minority, but I think it is much better than RAL

in which she boldly namechecks another craptacular ditty co-written with Mike Campbell. And how cringe-inducing is "I was born in the desert... so I know how it feels there." Just inexplicably bad, bad, bad... In hindsight I realize she was under the influence when she wrote this, so I'll cut her some slack. But at the time of it's release, I was seriously wondering WTF??? ![]() |

Oh no. I like The Other Side Of The Mirror until that God awful final track, her cover of I Still Miss Someone. For me that song is worse than Jane!

I was living in Phoenix when this was a new song, in 1991. I know how it feels there. I'm sure, knowing that you are a world traveler, you have been in a desert at some point. But to actually live in one, for many years, a realateable experience could be felt with the soldiers who are fighting a war in such extreme heat. Living in the Phoenix area feels like a whole different planet than living in a place with four seasons. In NYC where you reside, if the tempertaure was 104 degrees you might be visiting the hospital from dehydration and extreme humidity. In Phoenix such a tempertaure is no big deal. It may feel like 80 degrees would to you. 115 degrees in Phoenix is hotter than hell, but a normal July day. 115 degrees in NYC and the entire populace would most likely die from the humidity. If not die, multitudes would be extremely close to it. Also in another thread you or someone mentioned the lyric, "in a place the Indians call Paradise valley." If you are lucky enough to ever visit the section of this town that Stevie lived in you will learn that Camelback Mountain holds a special grotto where some Tribal Indians from the past had a spiritual place there to pray to their God(s). It was a sacred mountain. And this mountain when viewed from above is shaped like a Camel. There are many references in this song that perhaps only a Phoenician might truly understand, though I think she does a fine job in describing these, and their similarities to Operation Desert Storm. |

Hi Dodfather, yes I do have Real, along with everything else Belinda has released (solo and with the Go-Go's). Real has some fabulous tracks on it (Big Scary Animal, Tell Me, Here Comes My Baby) but I do prefer the Runaway Horses, Live Your Life and A Woman And A Man albums. Her version of Bonnie & Clyde from the Voila album is brilliant - check it out if you haven't heard it. I always thought Stevie should have recorded Valentine but that could be due to Belinda's obvious impersonation of her on the track. Did you realise she thanks Stevie in the credits of at least one of her albums? I think it's Heaven On Earth.

Hey Phil - I tried to pm you with this but it didn't give ne the option to?
I'm listening to Real right now. I have Runaway Horses (vinyl), The Very Best of Belinda (a European hits collection that spans Heaven On Earth - Live Your Life Be Free and was a HUGE hit), A Woman And A Man and Real. I had her early studio albums on cassette but went through that stupid 15-16yo phase where I didn;t think it was "cool" to listen to her and so got rid of them. Since then it's just been the Best Of and the stuff that came after that. I'm replacing the early stuff on vinyl, and I'll get the CD/DVD release of Heaven On Earth. I don't have Volia but know it well because of good old Spotify. I really need to get Belinda (1985) but it's hard to track down for a reasonable price, even on ebay (not looked for little while though). I love I Feel The Magic and Mad About You, and the rest of that album is great too! I also just have a good Go-Gos hits collction because, horror!), my copy of Talk Show broke a couple of months ago! Yep, Belinda loves Stevie! I bet she loved recording Lindsey's song for Belinda...

Whenever I have to suffer through one of those tortuous, endless 98°F 95% humidity days in New York, I always think of one of my favorite lines evah: "The day drags by... like a wounded animal" from Siouxsie & the Banshees "92°". That's so much better than saying "It's hot and I know what hot feels like." Last edited by HejiraNYC; 04-02-2010 at 10:28 AM.. |
