Default Marilyn Martin

Saturday, December 12, 2009

Marilyn Martin (born on May 4, 1954 in Tennessee, raised in Louisville, Kentucky) was a female pop singer from the mid 80's. Marilyn started her career by singing backup for artists such as Joe Walsh, Don Henley, Kenny Loggins, and Stevie Nicks.

When Doug Martin (former head of Atlantic Records) heard Marilyn sing backup on Stevie Nicks' 1985 album, "Rock A Little," he was impressed quite enough to ask for a demo from Marilyn. After that, Marilyn was signed to Atlantic Records for a 2-album contract. During 1985, Marilyn was connected with Phil Collins for the song, "Separate Lives" which was featured on the "White Nights" movie soundtrack. The song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her highest and most notable hit song to date.
In 1986, Marilyn released her self-titled debut album which peaked at #72 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Her first solo single, "Night Moves" peaked at #28 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also managed to peak at #18 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock charts.

The follow-up singles, "Body and the Beat" and "Move Closer" were released, but failed to make any impact on the Billboard charts at all.
In 1988, Marilyn released her sophomore album, "This is Serious" which didn't chart at all on the Billboard 200 chart.
The first single from the album, "Possessive Love" (which was written and produced by Madonna) failed to make an impact on the charts. The follow-up single, "Love Takes No Prisoners" didn't fair well either. After that, Marilyn was released from her contract with Atlantic Records.

Marilyn continued her music career by singing backup vocals for other artists throughout the 90's. Today, Marilyn now works as a realtor in Nashville, Tennessee.

Looks like Atlantic Records really tried to make a star out of Marilyn Martin but the public just wasn't interested. They never mentioned her covering Sorceror which got some airplay from the Streets of Fire Sountrack. Her duet with Phill Collins was a big hit though, at the time of its release.

As celebrity visits go, Renee Zellweger still wins in my book. She visited the hospital last year and stayed from 1100 until nearly midnight (much to the chagrin of her hospital escorts), visiting and posing for photos with just about every patient who wanted to meet her – not just the injured soldiers. She called the kids of one soldier so they’d believe him when he said she was here. She spent about 30 minutes in each solder’s room. She was also generous with her time in posing with staff for pics. I have only seen Stevie Nicks once as I was going off shift, but she’s another one who is usually there still making the rounds at midnight. But Ms Palin wins out over a lot of them who, as a co-worker explained to Ms Zellweger, show up and basically say, “I’m famous. Your injured. Take my picture!” and, having done their good deed, leave. President Obama was at the hospital recently, but sadly I was not working that day.

^^The people in the comments section are noting the resemblance between Sarah Palin and Stevie.

"Now, she is lookin’ like Stevie Nicks (or Madonna) cira 1980, Britney, cira 2008, or someone with really bad hightlights, circa..NEVER!"

"Yup – that sure is a Stevie Nick’s outfit there, you betcha. Complete with the “cross as fashion accessory”."

"Someone MUST photoshop Palin’s face on Stevie’s."

"Stevie Nicks not only has a better body than S’error Punked but also has better pipes and can actually play a musical instrument. "

Open Question »
How did Stevie Nicks become famous?

I don't hate her, but I don't like her voice. She sounds like a goat to me.
What was it that made her famous?

10 hours ago- 4 days left to answer.
Additional Details
I know she was in Fleetwood Mac. But I don't get how she could become so famous with her voice. It just plain sucks, IMHO

STEVIE NICKS IMPERSONATOR SEEKS BACKING BAND (Longmont - Denver )

Greetings,

I would like to put together a huge tribute show for spring of next year and looking for a very talented band with vocals to back me in a Stevie/Fleetwood Mac tribute project. I'm wanting my project to last an hr to an hr and a half on stage as I will be showcasing other tribute bands in a live concert in the Denver/Aspen/Vail areas. I guess I am picky as I want to bring back Stevie's earlier years so I am not looking for a typical tribute as I am wanting this to be a huge success. SERIOUS REPLIES ONLY!! YOU CAN HEAR A RECENT AUDIO RECORDING OF ME SINGING TO GOLD DUST WOMAN HERE: http://files1.mailboxdrive.com/mp3s/...com/963921.wma

This is NOT just for one live show - i am looking to book consistent gigs before then and afterwards. I am in talks with a few venues who have agreed to listen to the band's demo for possible booking. I have a feeling this could be a sell-out if myself and the band meshed well together. I am looking to practice one day/night a week for now - could rent a space or if someone knew of a spot that would be great that we could all pitch in to pay for. I found something in Lafayette that charges $25 an hr that's fully equipped. I am known for being part of an annual NYC event called 'Night of a 1000 Stevie's' (2006-2008). I was 1 of up to 30 performers chosen out of the U.S to sing to a 1000 Stevie Nicks fans. I missed this year due financial difficulties. I really would like to see this happen out here in Colorado which was the main reason I moved out here a year ago.

Possible Song List - Astericks are what I really want to work on:

*Rhiannon - Extended Version Fleetwood Mac
*Outside The Rain - Stevie Nicks (going into) Dreams - Fleetwood Mac
*Gold Dust Woman - Fleetwood Mac
*The Chain - Fleetwood Mac
Landslide - Fleetwood Mac
Sara - Fleetwood Mac
*Stop Dragging My Heart Around - Tom Petty/Stevie Nicks
*World Turning - Fleetwood Mac
*Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
Rock A Little - Stevie Nicks
*Gypsy - Fleetwood Mac
Would love to do Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes - lol
Stand Back - Stevie Nicks
*Gold - Stevie Nicks/John Stewart
*Sorcerer - Stevie Nicks
Beauty & The Beast - Stevie Nicks
Loves A Hard Game To Play - Stevie Nicks
Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks (As an Encore Performance Only)
Thousand Days - Stevie Nicks
*Battle of The Dragon - Stevie Nicks
*Tusk - Fleetwood Mac
*Sisters of The Moon - Fleetwood Mac
Peacekeeper - Newer Fleetwood Mac

I need costume changing so would need either a Christine McVie or Lindsey Buckingham solo songs:

Songbird
Everywhere
Hold Me
Bleed To Love Her
You Make Loving Fun
Oh Daddy
Never Going Back Again
Second Hand News
Big Love

If interested, please email me for more details!

Rock ON!

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1 1/2; You = 3 1/2
filed in Guess the Random Lyric on Dec.14, 2009

You guys have really got to start appreciating Ms. Stevie Nicks more, b/c none of you guessed that Friday’s lyric was from her song, “Stand Back.” For shame! And even worse, the point came too late for me to win.

It should be noted that GTRL is going on holiday hiatus starting next Monday, so this is your last challenge of not only the year, but also the decade, so let’s make this count with our Holiday Song Challenge!

First up, Showtune Monday. Not sure if this musical was ever on Broadway, but I try to watch it every holiday if I can, and this is my favorite song from it, even though it has nothing to do with Christmas. I’ll take the song and the two male leads OR the song and the composer for the point.
