Let's Talk About...Fall From Grace

I did a quick search and didn't come across this song on the "let's talk about" series.

This song is so powerful!! I love to listen to it when I'm feeling particularly helpless in a situation, and I can just belt out that powerful-woman message and feel better.

Stevie has said this is her "meanest" song (even though she's said that about at least one other song), and I can feel the "mean" she's talking about. However, I mostly feel like she is just bare-bones stating her case without the worry of hurting anyone. Just taking control of that single moment in time where you think "I've had enough, and this is what I'm gonna say about it."

I've read a few interpretations of the lyrics, and I have a few of my own, but no matter what Ms. Nicks had in mind, this song is brilliant.

I love it, and I love the way she belted it out on the Soundstage Sessions, actually punching the air during the performance...go Stevie!!!

It's a bit like a latter-day No Spoken Word or The Nightmare. I like it - one of the best things about TISL, and I'm glad she's decided to keep it in her solo concert set.

I for sure think it's about The Dance tour. Did anyone ever see the picture that inspired the title of the dance? It's a painting actually with 5 people in a sort of circle holding hands. I believe it's the soundstage preformance when she twirls her finger in a circle. When she does it always reminds me of the painting.

There's a few others aspects in there about the dance tour, but I don't have much time now. Did she ever confirm what it was about?

I love this song. I think it's easily the best track on Trouble In Shangri-La and it's a really refreshing change of pace and return to great rock music for her. Letme qualify that a bit... I know Stevie has said that she thought it was a bit too mean and for that reason it almost didn't make the album but that's what makes it great!I love Stevie's work but it was really cool to see her get back to being a pissed off crazy rock star for a change and not a wounded, philosophical muse (don't get mad, I love that stuff too!)

Now I'm waiting for people to get mad at me because I haven't expressed what I mean properly here..haha!

I'm so pleased that she has continued to do it live. If this track went the way of so many others and was never heard from after the release of the album I'd have been gutted. It's her best solo track in years!

So, just who is this song about?! It must be about one particular person, it's such an angry lyric and so pointed. I have to say that I think it's about either Lindsey or Joe Walsh. This is because of the way she describes how she has spoken about what went on between them in the song:

'maybe I made the whole thing up, maybe this isn't a lie'
'maybe the reason I say these things...'

The 2 relationships she has spoken about at length are these two. Apart from Mick, and Stevie tends to be a lot more romantic when discussing him as opposed to being downight pissed off! I think Lindsey gets the edge though...

'as it all begins again...' It was written, I believe, around the time of The Dance so this makes sense. Correct me if I'm wrong...

'maybe I've fought this long and this hard just to make sure you survive'... is this her belated response to Lindsey's 'you're here 'cos I said so' from Not That Funny?

Of course we don't know about every relationship she's had and so it could be about God knows who, but from what we do know I just can't think of anyone but Lindsey or Joe that has led to such anger, and certainly not acknowledged so publicly, as she admits to having done in the song...

Stevie herself said in the radio interview she did of April of this year (I can't recall who it was with I will have to look it up) that Fall From Grace was written during The Dance tour and is about Lindsey. She came right out and said it. She said that while it was mean, it had another undertone - she said she was "only trying to save him".

I have the interview somewhere - it's a great interview - like 42 mins long or something!

I had a feeling..it was between him and Joe Walsh..but, it makes perfect sense to be about Lindsey.

I'm glad Stevie wrote it...it's just brilliant, as I said before. This is every person's story in some way. We all have that person who knows how to push our buttons...classic Stevie material.

It's no secret this is one of my favorite recently written Stevie Nicks songs. It's my favorite song on Trouble in Shangri-la by far, and it's the song I look forward to hearing when she performs a solo concert. It's also my favorite song to sing at karaoke because I totally get lost in the song and I love it when people are surprised that she's written and sung this song.

I listened to and have that interview with Larry Flick where she talks about "Fall From Grace." It was such a joy to hear it.

I was looking at this Timespace era quote, where Stevie was interviewed in her dressing room after a show:

"See that picture of Lindsey (Buckingham)," she said, pointing to an old Fleetwood Mac group photo. Buckingham, unsmiling, was looking away from Nicks and the band, which he left in turmoil several years ago.

It reminded me of what she said about FFG. She said FFG was about FM, but then said FM was almost always going to be about her and Lindsey. So, in this interview she points to a picture of FM as a group, but says see that picture of Lindsey? It's just interesting to me.

Maybe in her mind that's how she gets away with keeping a picture of him around...as long as it's FM it's not so obvious...

Yeah and Lindsey had all of those pictures of FM in his Show You How video. In fact, the pictures of Stevie were much less obvious than the pictures of the other members. They lasted for fewer frames. There's Christine, John, mucho Mick, but where's Stevie? Oh, there's that one image where Lindsey's eyes meld into hers, but if you blink you miss it.

You had to slow that video down to see what was going on. Kristen might not even have noticed that Stevie was in the video at all.
