Smile at You (Thread II)

Sorry, but I just don't have time to read through 141 posts about Smile at You. But I do want to say that this version is so great, yet so strange at the same time. That chorus, I'm not sure about it. Part of me wants to cry "over-production," but more of me wants to cry "OH MY GOD, THAT'S AWESOME!" Definitely a visit back to Stevie's darker side...we didn't get too much of that on TISL except with Planets and the title track. I think I love this song though...I really do. As for Stevie's high singing, I knew she could still do it...just wondered why she wouldn't write that high anymore.

I finally heard it! I think it's totally awesome! It does harken back to the song Tango, but hey, that's one of my favs. As for Stevie's vox, when Stevie and Lindsey were discussing the vocal parts on the song Say You Will on that VBOFM video, Stevie brought up the point to Lindsey that his part would be hard to sing live. It occured to me that when she is writing her melodies she probably pays a lot of attention to whether or not she'd be able to sing whatever part she's writing night after night without having her vocal strings go flying out of mouth into the audience some night. I honestly think that this is the reason that we don't hear her hitting the high notes as much as we used to. I love her sound when she gets to those high notes, but I honestly doubt we'll be hearing Smile at You in concert. It's just going to be too hard on her.

Another thing: I really think we have with this song some of the "new ground" Mick's been hyping. This song is performed like nothing Stevie's ever done before. It is truly exotic. It's her Red Rover.

Good take on the song John.The way the first post went reminded me alot of the way some fans reacted to "Tusk' back in the day.I really cannot wait to hear this off the CD,or to hear the entire CD for that matter

Hi all, I just found this place and I have to say you all are sooo cool! Anyway back to the topic, I am glad they did the song so differently..
IMHO they could not have improved upon the way they did it for mirage. That version seems so polished to me, sounds awesome in my stereo, hardly what I'd call a demo. When I first listened to it I could hardly beleive they left it off the record (but then I think that about a lot of stevie outtakes!! lol).
I don't mind so much now though.. I will have a great quality outtake, a new very cool album version, not to mention the other versions! I'm glad they sort of brought back that 'aahh aaaaahhhh' part from the tusk version-- it gives me goosebumps! Can't wait to hear what else they have in store for us!

over production?.... no way ... this is perfect... listen to any of lindsey solo albums.. most of them are "over produced" .. sort of... he is the master at studio worka nd interesting effects... that in itself can be defined as over production... this song is wonderful...and stevie sounds great on it.. sure she strains a lil.. but man she hit alot of those notes again.... this is the boldest vocal from her I have heard in a long time.. much bolder than anything on her last solo album....I can wait to hear this album in entirety .. hear how they mixed them.. and the liner notes and pictures... a great day indeed it will be... I have been waiting and wishing for a new FM studio album for sooooo long.. and its almost here.... after that .. I want a new Police album
they were just incrediable at the rock n roll hall of fame show... =)

Sorry, but this song adds nothing to the demo I've loved and played for years. It's the very definition of over-produced, Stevie sounds strained on a lot of the high parts and am I missing something? or does she only sing the chorus once?! The spanish guitar at the end sounds out of place, but the worst part is the "run as fast as I can" part. This is the most I've ever heard Lindsey just completely bombard a Stevie song with his own quirks.

I'm wondering how he got "Say you will" and "Destiny Rules" so right and this song so wrong!

I like the new version of "Smile at You." It's adventurous, edgy and an interesting listen, even if it's not catchy or accessible. But from what we've heard so far, there are plenty of other catchy pop songs on this disc. They needed a few bizarre-o numbers to balance the mix. Remember, this is Fleetwood Mac _ part of what makes them special is that they can do both weird *and* mainstream equally well.

Hey Blinker-I agree-Fm always has a little weirdo edge-and this isn't really that weird-it's just different than what everyone has heard in those demos for so long. I love to see the production of Stevie songs go out on a limb a little. Her songs vary little in their production so let's welcome this as a breath of fresh air. I would love to see more avant productions of her songs-granted, she is a weirdo (I say lovingly, which one of US isn't?!?) but her songs could be more artsy - maybe she'd get some Kate Bush like respect instead of getting trashed all the time by critics!
