well, I get what she means. Most of the songwriters I know, take something, whether that something is an experience, something that's said, something they've seen, something that's felt, and then build from that to create the full song. Has Stevie said every word of her songs are a 'truth'? If that is the case, I could see how some of these fantastic interpretations arise...and how the L&S lovestory/mystique lingers.
