Erin, this comment got me to thinking. I've decided that "fan" isn't a marketing category -- or one with any distinct meaning. From the perspective of the music market, there are no fans. There are consumers & there are non-consumers. Fleetwood Mac's in business. It uses market principles of supply, demand, cost, and contracts to be successful. Like Chevron. Fleetwood Mac, like Chevron, wants to make consumers satisfied, of course, but that's a lot different from the view that "fans" shouldn't be "milked" -- for reasons of loyalty or love or support.


Also wanted to add something about Mick. Someone said earlier that Lindsey is the only one in the band who has put out some albums in recent years. But Mick has, too -- two or three albums, in fact, in the past five years or so.

They most certainly get asked the same freaking stupid questions time after time. And circumstances kind of dictate slightly different answers nowadays. But, the fact is, John is still the quiet one who just wants to shut up and play (God bless him!). Mick sees himself as the English gentleman (no comment). Stevie is the self-professed Ancient Diva Fairy Grandma lately (!!!) and Lindsey is The Artiste.

They are going to answer questions through those filters. So, no. I'm not taking them as seriously as I once did. There are going to be things that piss me off, and things that make me laugh. The tour is what it is. There is, really, nothing much to say about it. Even if everyone agreed with Lindsey and said it's all for the money--where do you go from there? Follow-up question would probably be about their love affairs and just how hard Rumours was to make. The interviews are geared for the casual fans, not die-hards who've heard it all before.

They are as "trapped" as they want to be...

I don't know. I'm more offended by Mick and Stevie saying this tour is "for the fans" and then offering up virtually the same old stale set list for inflated prices (people worrying about these hard economic times will be soothed, they say, by the familiar songs on offer, forgetting that those who actually have money worries won't be able to afford to go). At least Lindsey is honest about his motives.

What justifies Lindsey's comments for me is the fact that he spent the past couple of years releasing albums and touring behind them, knowing full well that they probably wouldn't chart and he would most likely lose more than make money. He did it for his art and his fans and he was honest about his intentions there. So the fact that he blatantly says, "I'm doing this for money" really does not bother me. I'm grateful he's honest and I'm still going to see the concert and cheer for the band. Really, I am going for Lindsey. I love him dearly and he's my favorite. Yes, he's capable of being a bit of an asshole, but I enjoy parts of that side of him sometimes as well. It's an interesting combination with Stevie's airy personality.

You could say I am biased, but actually I'd probably applaud any other artist if they said what he said after they'd spent the last few years doing what Lindsey has done.

I'm going to have to jump on the bandwagon and say that I'm glad Lindsey said it. I wish he wasn't doing FM at all if that's the main motivation behind it, since it makes him a hypocrite for all the times he slagged the Eagles, but at the very least he is being honest.

Let's face it: Lindsey needs the money. Stevie can make boatloads of cash with/without Fleetwood Mac- she doesn't need this. What's there to be "honest" about? It's painfully self-evident in Lindsey's case.
