It can be pretty unnerving, especially in poor weather.
Well, there was that one accident where the plane went off the end of the runway and thru a fence and unfortunately ended up on top of a car killing I think it was a 6 year old boy.

Yes- in the middle of a snowstorm. If the plane continued even a hundred feet further, it would have crashed into at least 2 or 3 (multi-unit) houses.

The other incident - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Airlines_Flight_553 - miraculously, only two people died on the ground.

If anything resembling what happened in Clarence Center happened on the takeoff/landing approach at Midway, it would be catastrophic, with several dozens of victims on the ground.

I have changed planes at Midway and noticed this ..it is comparable to Lindbergh Field in San Diego where I grew up also in the middle of the city ..back in the 1970s when I was a kid they had always talked about moving it but there it still sits ..Incidentally there was a terrible accident there when I was in high school when a PSA passenger jet was hit by a Cessna as it was nearing the airport crashing into a city neighborhood of North Park killing all on the planes and some on the ground.
