Why don't we start a thread -- Favorite Remakes?

A few that come to mind in my case:
THE MALTESE FALCON (Huston)
THE WIZARD OF OZ (Fleming)
THE LETTER (Wyler)
HIS GIRL FRIDAY (Hawks)

I put the director name to specify which version I mean.

Haha - those are always the best moments. I always find those in the oddest places, and they always make my day. I will have to check the movie out.

Mine will be a VERY short list. It would consist of THE THING (Carpenter) and...uh...uhm...yep.

If you do a "Not-Favorite Remakes," though, I can whine all over that til the cows come home. Sean flippin' Bean in The Hitcher, anyone? Rob Zombie's atrocious mangling of Halloween?

All the same, baby. All the same.

Hmmm.. this raises an interesting point. Is it a remake if it's a more recent adaptation of another book or play? Especially when the original or previous film adaptions did not impress themselves upon the audience's consciousness in a significant way (certainly not in the manner as those films above). MOre to the point, are the above adaptations that exist in relation to the source material or remakes that consciously bounce off of previous adaptations? In other words, Switching Channels is surely a remake of His Girl Friday but is His Girl Friday a remake of The Front Page MOVIE? hmmm.... Is Thieves Like Us a remake of They Live By Night or another adaptation of the same novel?

I'm not against remakes in theory. I'd have to think if there are any that particularly impress me.

For example, I DO think of The Manchurian Candidate (Demme) as a superior remake, rather than adaptation of the novel.

King Kong (1976) version.

Planet of the Apes (Tim Burton)

Imagine paying $1000 to hear "Don't Dream It's Over" instead of "Go Your Own Way"

Fleetwood Mac helped me through a time of heartbreak. 12 years later, they broke my heart.

No. Your post made me realize: I don't know what constitutes a remake.

My favourite remake is probably Sabrina.
