Some of the prominent people I respect a great deal (like Jon Stewart) love Howard Stern, even consider him a genius, much to my chagrin. No matter who Howard "really is" many of his listeners lack a deeper level of understanding or a higher level of discernment. He may know better, but an alarming number of them do not and I feel he perpetuates attitudes that trouble me deeply.

So, LB may be a Stern fan, but I sure hope he never appears on the show. Michele

If Lindsey ever appeared on the Stern and his crew would not only respect him, they likely would worship him. Of course there would be a little prodding about his past, but it's not like Lindsey would not expect it. I'm sure he would handle it with humor...and answer what he wants to answer. We would get an interview from Lindsey like never before or ever!! I see Martha Stewart in an entirely different light ever since she appeared on Howard's show. He brought out a side of her character she rarely shows -- she was completely real, humorous, unoffended by anything, honest and revealingly forthcoming...sometimes about very personal things. It broke down a lot of misconceptions I had about her. Not that I crave to hear about Lindsey's sex life in the 1970s...but if the question comes up, he may "shut it down", be vague, or be starkly candid. Regardless, these interviews are always done with an ultimate regard for the guest, along with an expected salacious humor rooted in deep respect.

Would you deny yourself the opportunity to listen to this never-to-happen interview, if it actually happened?

I wouldn't deny myself. I'd eagerly listen to the tape of Mick and the McVies on the show if I could, now that I know they did it. I bet it's hilarious.

You know, Colbert says that once in awhile people come up to him and they think he's serious. It's not clear to them that he's putting on an act. But I think that's true of less than 5% of Colbert's audience. With Howard, I think about 50% of the people who listen to him really hold the views expressed on the show that I find the rankest. So, I'm glad he's around. I've been seeing him since I was in college and he would appear on the Letterman show as a guest in the eighties. I believe in freedom of speech and don't like to have people like him censored. But when I like someone like Roger Ebert, David Duchovny, Conan O'Brien, Jon Stewart . . . I always feel disappointed when I find that they really look up to Stern's show.

I wasn't dismissing Howard. Everyone is entitled to express themselves in the arts any way they see fit. I listened to Howard and his crew when they were on public radio. Even watched his televison show back in the 1990's. I was just bringing up the point that some of the Mac were on his show.
