I was reading some early reviews this morning. They were very positive. That photo of Heath Ledger is just plain creepy.

This movie has four things going for it that Batman Begins didn't:

1. It's not an origin story, so we don't have to sit through 1 1/2 hours of Bruce Wayne's brooding before he does some actual bat****.

2. I actually recognize the bad guy, and Gads, Ledger looks frickin' scary as the Joker. Seriously, did any casual fans know who the hell Scarecrow was, or Ru'Wafo Nafou or whoever it was that was played by Liam Neeson?

3. This movie actually looks serious and complex, as Batman was intended to be. I mean, Begins was "sorta" serious, but in the end it just resorted to the old "hero and villain fighting each other on a train" cliche.

4. No Katie Holmes this time. I've seen scratching posts with more charisma than her character in Begins.

I wasn't sure if Batman was always intended to be serious, dark, but I think I read it started that way, and had different phases (science fiction, pop art, funny, etc).. Obviuously the dark, little remorse over killing or maiming criminals, is the most exciting..

The 60's TV show was the first Batman project that was "light"...the original comic book was "dark".

Yes, the Batman comics in the beginning were quite "dark." The quintessential Batman story would probably be "The Dark Knight Returns" by Frank Miller. It came out in 1986. It's SUPERB. if you're a Batman fan at all, it's a must read.

PS...to answer someone's earlier question...yes, I knew who the Scarecrow was. He was a really cool villain on the Batman Animated Series from the early 90s. And Ra's Al Ghul has been around for quite some time too, he was just never a major player, or that popular.

-ScareCrow was totally a badass on the cartoons!!!! And I was soGlad that they did one of the OTHER villans, other than ones that had been done, (and screwed up by) the other recent movies. (except for Jack Nicholson as the joker, and Michelle P. as Catwoman, i thought the others were just waaaay to Campy. Arnold as Mr. freeze? Tommy lee jones as 2 face, ect. phu-leeze.

-NOT a Katie holmes fan. at all and I am glad shes gone

-Cant wait to see it!!! GOING AT MIDNIGHT SHOWING!!!!

I was going to say it's SUPPOSED to be a dark story, but ya'll have touched on that. The initial Batman movie was semi-dark, and although dated, I think all did a fine job. Nicholson's joker was fab.
I like the look better of this one, and was ardent about the last one. Isn't it also the Memento director doing this (and the last) film? Ugh, I always forget his name, but he's frggin' genious. The vibe/feel of the last film was perfect...imo.

Chris Nolan.

Yeah these new movies...are still missing something. They are making them more "realistic"...you know, how would Batman do what he does in the real world. They are missing that macabre kind of...neurotic wackiness that comes with Batman. I think Tim Burton overdid it, but he got the mood of it right. I think Michael Keaton played a way better Bruce Wayne than anyone else has. That's the key to it, I think. Plus Keaton had a better "Batman voice" too.
