Me? No. He's a killer technician with his barreling barging belching style that lent such personality to the old Springsteen songs. Roy plays Texas- & Chicago-style ornamentation & embellishments: blues grace notes & double grace notes, tremolos, turns, octave lead-ins, arpeggios of course, boogie bass lines, rapid thirds & fourths, etc. He's great at syncopation. But mostly octaves -- in fact, Roy is a total master of octaves, at playing them rapidly & trippingly & frippingly & oh so quite hippingly. He's a big crashy stashy slashy mashy piano player, with near-total technical control of the ivories. I like the atmosphere he gave to all those old songs, like JUNGLELAND, OUT IN THE STREET, THE PROMISED LAND, & ROSALITA. I mean, GOLD & BRAID wouldn't be half the song it is without him.

I'd love to hear you guys post some of your playing. Would you consider? I like to hear how others tackle the challenges that Chris & Stevie present (such as they are).

As for SONGBIRD's chord progression, it's a variant of I-IV-V. F major is I, Bb major is IV, & C major is V. Beethoven would have scoffed at it & called it a Schusterfleck.

You disappoint me, friend. We stand at the precipice, my friend. We are looking out over the chasm of serendipity, the gulf of a New You. No more excuses, no more pain, no more turning away from the Good, the True, the Free. You must share your music with me, not to judge but to express the joy that is in me, the joy that wants to burble its way to the top, like a little bubble in a bathtub. Hejira, too. Where did she go?

It's from the May issue, but imo the interview itself is from six months ago.

Stevie's FM stuff is pretty easy... but her solo stuff, especially the stuff played by Roy Bittan, can be pretty tough. As Stevie herself once said, sometimes it's a bitch!

I've always ben able to listen to ANY of her songs and at least figure out the chords, if not the exact fingerings. It's always fun to play along with a CD~

Thank you so much for typing this out, Sharon. It's fascinating stuff - and even some new bits! I especially liked the details about her life pre-Mac. I could have done without the digs at Lindsey but oh well, there will always be drama there. Her comment that he loved her more than anyone was sweet, but ruined by the follow up that she didn't love HIM that much - her "big love" was Joe Walsh. I think that was designed as a Lindsey smackdown too.

Thanks for the scan - LOVE the photos!

[MacMan]

Hey, Thanks for posting the scans...

[Hawkeye]

I freaking love the picture of Stevie, Sheryl and Kid Rock from 2001.

I went to Barnes and Noble the other day, looking for this issue. They still had April on the shelf, with REM on the cover.

Me too. The guy at the counter told me that they should have the new issue within the next couple of days.
