Both of these took me 35 years to learn. The wrong ways make more sense phonetically. :P But I've got it now.

Then and than...

You are dumber than a box of hair.

We're going to eat then we're going to sleep together.

End of lesson.

I love this thread, even though I am guilty of spelling errors all the time..so Carrie, thank you for not pointing out the fact that I spelled gynecologist wrong last night.

It's "weird", not "wierd".

"Loose" and "looser" are the opposite of tight and tighter, not the spelling for "lose" and "loser". <--- I hate this one most of all.

Data is pronounced "day-tah", not "dah-tah".

And, most importantly -

F-R-I-E-N-D, NOT F-R-E-I-N-D

And yes, I did...I'm ashamed.

And Tower, the data things is more of a preference thing...most dictionaries (at least the ones at my office and online) list both pronunciations as correct ones

you should be ashamed.

and re: data, "dayta" is the preferred pronunciations according to most dictionaries, but the others "dat-a" and "dah-ta" are acceptable. much more egregious is when people use "data" as singular. it's plural.
