I didn't like living with my parents. But the thing I liked about highschool was not so much the people and whatnot, it was getting to do/learn lots of different things in a day and not having to work. Well, I had a little job, but you know what I mean.
Now, my days are filled with one or two boring things for the most part, rather than 7 mostly interesting things. In highschool I had drama class and choir class and then drama or choir rehearsals, then also a sport to practice after school and games to go to, and then drama and choir performances to do in front of people. Or band, when younger.
And of course a different subject every hour.
You can probably see how that particular quality of highschool would be more interesting. I mean, maybe if I didn't have drama/choir/sports practices, and get to perform in front of people all the time with those, I wouldn't have liked it as much. It's fun if people watch you do stuff you are good at all the time. hee.

That's about it, though. If my life was like that now, I would think my life was just as fun. But no, it's mostly the same boring **** all day every day. Doing something different every hour is perfect for my temperament and brain.
I had some friends, and one best friend. People didn't really make fun of me or anything, to my face. I was voted most funny my senior year. But like I says, I don't really miss the social aspect. Not at all. Me and my friends didn't do drugs or drink. Well, me and my best friend did acid a few times, but otherwise, no. We would ditch to go to the river, or watch twin peaks, or just drive around. Very wholesome ****. hehehehe.

I would go to a reunion of the first highschool I attended, because those are the kids I knew my whole life growing up. Unfortunately, I graduated from a different highschool who's reunions I would not care about at all, and who I didn't know that many people. Most of the ones I like, I'm still friends with. Although switching to that highschool was really, really good for me because I had just broken up with my friends at the other highschool. And also, at my old highschool drama and choir kids were geeks, but at my new highschool they weren't, so I got into those things instead of just sports.

Yeah, that was me, pretty much all through school.

My high school did not have a drama dept. There really wasn't much of an arts crowd at all. The art classes that were offered were very small, and it was mostly treated as a "blow-off" class. Everyone (except for one or two) hated the art teacher because she actually tried to teach art, which they couldn't care less about. I mean, this was the South. You either played football, were a cheerleader, or nobody knew your name.

High school was hardly the pinnacle of my life. I know it is for some people. For others, it is also the absolute low point. Either way, I don't think for anyone that the experience was without meaning. Its just up to us to figure out what that meaning is and to use it to our advantage. As they say, the unexamined life is not worth living.
It was certainly the low point for me, and I have no idea what it's meaning was, other than to show me that I really did not belong in the family or regional culture that I was born into.

Well, that's another thing. I probably could've quit school in the 6th grade, and I'd still be about as intelligent as I am now, since I was mostly self-educated after that. It was really a ****ty school system I grew up in. My high school biology teacher, for instance, decided to not teach us about evolution because, in her words, "it's such a touchy subject." I lost all heart in school after that - I mean, the teachers were more concerned with offending their fragile little Christian sensibilities than with doing their fukcing jobs. I had no role models growing up. Only people who showed me how I *didn't* want to be.

Oh, that sucks. I was in a very good school system. In fact, it sounds like your school sucked in general. That is too bad, because highschool can be fun. Or at least informative.

Hmm...this one time me and my friend wanted to do a short play that intimated an affair. Well, said there was an affair, and there was a bit of a problem with that, but in the end, we got to do it.

I should add that I've sometimes thought that if I had the attitude I have now, back then, I might have actually liked high school.
I put up with a lot of **** and kept my mouth shut through a lot of harrassment and abuse. But nowadays, I have a big mouth and I don't take **** from anyone.

you and I are so much alike. the South sure is something. especially the deep, Delta South.

I was different only in the respect that even though I wasn't a footballer or cheerleader (crazy, right? ) I was still part of the "in-crowd" and had lots of friends and all that. it still didn't make high school anything I really care to remember. I was a total bitch to poor people and people that didn't "fit in" and I do regret that. I often wonder what happend to Jerry R. or Pam N. - do they sit and think of the hateful things I did? I hope not.

I tutored a couple black footballers and after one lesson, they said "now blow me" or something to that effect. I got the tongue through the fingers action a lot in the hall. and a lot of shouting from school buses. even though I was popular. so, I wasn't exempt. I still see those faces of the kids that did that to me and I loathe them. to this day. but, then I turned around and did the same thing to some kids. karma's a bitch. but, I've changed. or at least, I'm trying to change. :P

Oh, the gay kid making fun of the poor kids. Neat. I should've suspected what with your making fun of people's clothes thing when you were here. God, I would've so ripped you a new one. I would have made fun of your low level of coordination, by the looks of it. And when we were little, I would've thrown the ball at you really hard during dodge ball and kick ball. I would have smacked you in the face, and you would have cried. Mwahahahaha!!!
Poor kids are scrappy, you know. They don't have toys, so they play outside all the time and hone their muscly quickness, and become mean.

will I never live down the mop/sidewalk fiasco?

I know. it's terrible and I've repented. I give to Goodwill all the time.

speaking of those games...we had one called deer. one person on either side of a sidewalk and a third, the "deer", runs down the sidewalk while the other two throw a baseball. I can't tell you the bruises I had. so, I got my share. don't worry. why was I always picked as the deer? oh, right...mop/sidewalk fiasco...

Dude, you missed the mop.

If you have truly repented, you wouldn't make fun of people's clothes. It must be the gay blood in you.

Deer? That's pretty brutal, baseballs are just like bigger rocks. I can't believe you played that. That is just an excuse to throw rocks at someone, really. We only did that when we got in fights. Why would you even play that? Did you guys not have mitts? Or just didn't know how to use them?
They should have picked you as a thrower, I would think you could run okay, but probably not throw for ****.
Okay, I'll stop now. I was a bit of a bully in my young years...until just now....

The cool thing about that was opportunity, and the ability to learn things.
Totally cool that you were part art geek and part jock. There a few of us out there.

It is a bummer that you missed out on the continuity of the group. That is something I really value. Those people who have seen it all, other than my family, I mean. And the kids from school saw a different side of me. Its a great touchstone, that persective and shared experience.

I'm clearly in the minority, to refer to the title of the thread. Simply considering the fact that I unraveled all that **** and gave it the amount of thought it needed to become a relevant thing that was of concrete benefit. Warts and all. Puzzling.

Having thought about it - there's only one positive I can take from my high school years:

NEVER loan someone your music (Be it CD or cassette) because either you will never see it again, or it will return to you in worse shape than it was before you loaned it out.

Well that's something to show for four years. Better than a stick in the eye.

High school tended to be a mixing pot for me. Some days it was fantastic, other days I longed for the day I'd get my diploma and hightail it the fukc out of there. I was never one of the "in crowd", though I did end up making a lot of friends when I joined drama club. Actually to be honest, most of the fun times occurred around my drama club friends, but most of the rest of high school was just hell.

The few people I actually cared about I still keep in touch with, so I'm sure when my reunion comes around I probably won't even bother to go.

That is what I was thinking when I read yours. And Strand's. I feel really "lucky".

Yes. But I mean, I already knew I was good at those things, I'd been doing them for years before highschool. But definitely, all that experience.

It was for the best. The "group" was 'bout sick of me. But I guess you are right in a way because I had known those kids from the first highschool my whole life, and I am sad that I can't really be invited to those reunions. However, I'm pretty sure my last 2 highschool years were much, much, much, better and more fun for me by moving to the new school. So much. I made a lot of new friends and was involved in a lot of activities.
Although sports was harder at the new school, the new girls didn't like an interloper getting to play instead of them and stuff. But I only marginally cared, I was there to play. I mean, I kicked ass and was on their team, so they couldn't really ignore me or anything. Plus, the softball girls were really redneck, and not too smart. The volleyball girls were normal, smart, etc.

That is interesting. I don't know how you did that. But your highschool experience seems...full of a lot of stuff. Emotion stuff, and growing up stuff. Experiences. You know, enough stuff to warrant that attention. Pretty cool.

My highschool years were mostly like the rest of my life before that. I guess it wasn't incredibly dramatic, just very busy. Busy with things that didn't really have emotional content, no big growing experiences or anything. I guess I was suprised that I could make friends and things in a new place. I actually got along really well, which I'm suprised at. That was valuable. I guess some part of me expects that people won't like me, but they did, and they do (not everyone, of course). I guess the shy, insecure part inside me sometimes forgets that I'm not really shy and insecure. Anyway, it's still something I have to remember whenever I'm in a new/social situation.
I tell you what, if I were in highschool I wouldn't have a Speech quiz due in the next 1/2 hour. Although I always waited until the last minute do do my work then, too. 3.0 GPA, baybe!!! Rock on, mediocre!!!

I got along with everyone. Of course, when you sing in full voice "OOOOOOOOOOOKLAHOMA WHERE THE WIND . . . . . . " while loping down the halls, it is hard for people to hate youi

Actually, I was a little like Stella Mayfair in High School
