Well, I did a little bit of googling and only came up with the following links on how Amazon.com determines sales ranks. It must be a closely guarded secret, more closely guarded than Fort Knox from what little I could find on the subject.

I know, probably more than you ever wanted to know or care about regarding sales ranks and how they are determined and if they really mean anything.

Edit: I know these articles talk about books, but am sure the same probably applies to CD units sold.
