word. and it sounded like his guitar was a bit out of tune as well. all-in-all, did not make for a very good performance. i was voting for good old imogen but i knew she'd loose to underwood so it wasn't that big of a shock.

Dutch radio reported that the only reason the Dixie Chicks won was because they were due an apology from the 'music industry' for coming down so hard on them back when they made those comments. Mind you, nobody knows the Dixie Chicks here.

not to demean their win or the fact that their album was, in actuality, very solid, but i think it did have a small bit to do with the fact that during the initial fallout, they were shunned by many and by giving them grammy nods, it was a way to acknowledge the industry as a whole still stands by them. however, i certainly don't think it's the only reason.

I haven't had time to read this whole thread yet but I thought the show was definitely one of the better ones I've seen in a long time. The show as always is a bit long. When they did the lifetime achievement things for The Doors and The Grateful Dead, it would have been nice if they gave the guys a moment to speak. I missed most of The Police's performance, it was pretty short. Fortunately, I recorded it and went back and watched it later. My verdict is that the boys still have it. I think that is going to be one hot tour. And Mary J. Blige touched my heart with her first acceptance speech for One. Christina Aguilera blew the roof of the joint doing her rendition of James Brown's It's A Man's World. And I've also got to hand it to Justin Timberlake. The kid has matured into one hell of a talented writer, musician and performer. I'm actually a fan. I love What Goes Around. And I loved his backup singers hand movements when they sing "what goes around..." It reminds me of the hand movement Stevie does during Sorcerer when she sings about the black ink darkness.

While her rendition impressed me quite a bit, I still think it paled to Concrete Blonde's version on their Walking In London album. Johnette Napolitano's version is really tough to top. (Unless you're talkin' James Brown hissownself)

Cream is the model that all subsequent trios modeled themselves after.

While I think the guys in Rush are all technically proficient to an incredible standard, I think their music has no soul...they're just being technical for technical's sake. (there are many bands I put on that same list) I can listen to one or two carefully selected tracks of theirs at a time, but they just don't move me to listen longer than that. Cream strikes me on an emotional level first, THEN on a technical level. One of the reasons I was drawn to Clapton's playing in the first place, then add Jack Bruce's phenomenal bass playing & Ginger Baker's otherworldly drumming.

The Police...now, they make my feet tap, my head bob, and my body move.

ZZ Top just exudes "coolness".

Zeppelin? I just think we'd end up in a shouting match.

More on the Grammys:

Ok, I was impressed with that Justin Timberlake tune he did sitting at the piano. I knew nothing of his music to that point...he'd just been somebody who'd been on tabloid covers to me.

Actually, I thought Rascal Flatts didn't do too bad a job on those Eagles tunes, but the guitarists seemed like they learned the songs from tabs about an hour before the show. I would've liked to have heard MORE Bob Wills tunes instead though. "Right Or Wrong" maybe? And, why didn't Ray Benson get a feature? His work with Asleep At The Wheel has kept the Bob Wills sound alive all these years...didn't even get face time. I thought that was the "snub of the evening".

I LOVED Common's dig at Kanye West about his constant whining about not winning awards.

Ok, my snotty comment of the day:

Would somebody PLEASE put Stevie Wonder on Nutri-System? Someone's going to mistake him for Barry White here soon.

Because Rascal Flatts moves product. They are the face of WHAT is wrong with the music business. Spiked hair, and mixing rap with "what they call" country. ALL marketing, IMO. That singer, Gary "Whatever", doesn't have a country note in his body!!!! He's singing R&B, or something.....doing the "black" vocal inflections, squeezing 27 notes into every syllable.
(I got to see the bass player get out of his SUV-limosine, in Nashville, a couple weeks ago. Everyone was taking his pic. I was very impressed )

Asleep at the Wheel is the real deal, and their demographic is too old, therefore the machine has no interest in them. I love AATW, and Bob Wills. Of course, the record companie's aren't marketing to me.

is just the teen-boy-band for the country music industry, unfortunately they suck major amounts of ass. Their music is as lifeless as it is souless.

Btw, I agree with everything you said

edit: As for power trio's, would the Jimi Hendrix Experience count? How about the much underappreciated but yet musically talented geniuses of King's X???

Word. Asleep at the Wheel aren't exactly slouches in the Grammy win club either...

I've got a pic of me and Ray Benson. I think the top of my head is at his naval.

Never heard it. I'll have to check it out. I'm a Concrete/Johnette fan.

Couldn't agree more. I've tried to like this band but nothing of theirs has really moved me since Moving Pictures. After that, I just don't get it.
