I'm a huge fan of "Red Rover" now.
I actually liked it amongst the 'Gift of Screws' tracks but then disliked it within the running order of 'Say You Will.'
Now I'm head over heels for it and I've cited it as an example of Lindsey's "new style" that actually works.

wow. i'm having a hard time trying to figure out which posts here i actually want to read.

the point of this thread was not to bitch. i wanted to know if SG was gonna be some recycled track i've already heard.. in which case, i'll buy the non-BN-exclusive version. pretty simple question, blown totally out of proportion because you people seem to enjoy the drama.

In all fairness, these two comments sounded a little, uhm, "bitchy"....

i'm not trying to hate, but none of my other lindsey cds have the stevie nicks stamp on them and that's just fine by me.

I'd love to have a discussion with you, but I totally can't follow you here. Since that is often the case, it's atricky path to go. This logic is impossible for me to follow: I love it in a context, I hate it in another and now you Love it again? The context hasn't changed! The same with say goodbye. I understand that you hate the studioversion, plinkaplink and so (very intelligent description by the way), I understand that you like the live version, it's VERY different from the original you dislike, but now you love the song again. Sorry dude, but to me it sounds like total crap.

Put the doors open for Shut Us Down. The music and the vocallines meet eachother in a heartbreaking beautiful way. The tension is there in the fact that those two melodies derange and flow away from eachother, that makes the point where they meet again so friggin beautiful. Shut down judgement for five minutes and let it flow into you. Smoke a joint if you can't do it by yourself. That song is the best thing he ever recorded and I'm sure that there will be a bigger following a month (maybe two) from now.

agreed. agreed. agreed. the hushed vocals add a lot to the music he's written. it's one of his most beautiful songs -- if not the most beautiful, imo.

I didn't say I loved "Red Rover" originally. I said I liked it.
Then within the context of 'Say You Will' it stuck out like a sore-thumb and I was turned off by it. I think that's a fair opinion.

Once I started listening to it OUT of context... in other words, on its own and not while listening to the rest of 'SYW'... I was more receptive to it again and fell in love with it.

As for my feelings for "Say Goodbye" live vs. the album version, there's a big difference between disliking a SONG and disliking a TRACK. I dislike "Say Goodbye" as a track (the production, the mixing, etc.), not as a song.
Easy enough to understand, I thought.

I've never smoked a joint in my life and don't plan on starting now, so I guess I'll just have to keep listening to it the old fashioned way... you know, without my mind being chemically altered.

Which, come to think of it, could explain why you think it's the best thing he's ever recorded!

i gotta admit, stew, when i first heard shut us down, i was like.. okay, this guitar work is amazing, but what's up with the raspy whisper? it took me a few listens - which isn't normal for me and lindsey, i might add - but then it clicked.

i love it, love it, love it and it makes perfect sense with the subject of the song. he sounds a little desperate but then suddenly strong, with conviction.

i'm proud of lindsey for doing it the way he did, which is kind of standing up for the belief that music doesn't have to be pretty. even from the heart. (cuz god knows the heart isn't always pretty.)

Well put. I totally agree. I actually hope there's a couple more songs like Shut Us Down on Under The Skin.

(Hands over )...I never needed the joint to appreciate this overwhelming gem.

All opinion is fair. But you like a song or you don't. That can change, especially with such weird songs, but what happened to you and Red Rover is hard to follow. I just still don't dig your logic, but then again I never will.

No. You needed the liveversion to hear the SONG in the track. (what the heck am I saying here.) Because you don't open up for the way lindsey writes these kind of songs. Now you hear the greatness of the song too in the original, but you stick to your judgement by blaming it on production. No prob, but admit it. By the way Lindsey's songwriting IS production. Do I need to explain things with an interesting metaphor about paint and canvas?

I've never smoked a joint in my life and don't plan on starting now, so I guess I'll just have to keep listening to it the old fashioned way... you know, without my mind being chemically altered.

Which, come to think of it, could explain why you think it's the best thing he's ever recorded!
You obviously know nothing about the 100% unchemic, natural herbs I'm referring to. I smoke about 4 joints a year so believe me, I appreciate music without it. ( yes, I saw you were joking, but I'm Dutch, so the image is already there).

Maybe it's the language barrier... I don't know. I didn't think it was too hard to follow: I didn't say that I suddenly went from liking the song to hating it -- I said that when listening to "Red Rover" within the context of 'Say You Will' (INITIALLY) I was turned off by it.

But in listening to it on its own, I developed such a love for it that I now enjoy the song within the context of 'Say You Will.'

Ever get sick of a song that you initially liked, Gerald, but then you developed a new appreciation of it later? Well, that's what happened here.

Yes, but in this case... to my ears... the production did the song a disservice. There was something much better hidden within that fussy production, and once he approached it differently on stage -- and the song was allowed to breathe -- it took on a new life.

It didn't require a big change, mind you, but it made all the difference in the world.

(By the way, I was having so much fun debating all of this earlier that I was almost late for work!)

I don't know what kind of chemicals they are putting in the herb over there in the US, but in Amsterdam and other fine places, it's all natural, baby!
