If this is the real tracklisting then I really can't complain at all. I think for an acoustic album he's pulled the best stuff off GOS and put it there, I think it's a nice mix of those songs and new (new to us) stuff.
My originaly reaction to eleven tracks was "That's a bit short" but now that I think about it it's fairly reasonable.

Exciting times!! Sounds like everyone thinks it will be a triumph. Woot!

I just hope that it's good. I loved GIFT OF SCREWS and I liked SAY YOU WILL, but I have to admit, I was disappointed with the SOUNDSTAGE show, and I've always loved Lindsey's acoustic performances. I'm thinking specifically of the many promotional spots he did for OUT OF THE CRADLE---acoustic versions of "Countdown," "Street of Dreams, "Never Going Back Again," and others.

On the other hand, the SOUNDSTAGE show just seemed...I don't know...sterile? Maybe even a little boring. I know---blasphemy! Believe me, it hurts to even have such thoughts, but I just hope the new album will be a fun new direction for Lindsey and that the songs and performances are good. I'm not one of those people who prefers "the old Lindsey" or "the solo Lindsey" or whatever. I like the guy's music, and I know he's capable of great things in any given moment, so I guess my expectations are just a little higher when he's concerned.

Hello all---

Thanks for the kind welcome. I've actually been reading The Ledge for many years now...maybe 10 or more? I know I was checking out The Penguin site back when I first started my current job, and that was over 10 years ago. I've posted messages a couple of times, but not very much and not in several years.

As for the new album, I'll believe it when I have it in my hands, and if it includes "Down on Rodeo," then I'll be happy. The fact is that I'll buy a Lindsey album whether I like it or not...*grin*.

If this is the acoustic album and there's an electric one coming next time around, my question is:

Will this version of Down On Rodeo be some special new acoustic version (something between the rough demos and the Soundstage), or the full bass+drums 'complete' version from GOS?

I know that we don't have confirmation that this is even the official tracklist (although it seems like a very likely list), but still it's worth pondering.

If the next album is more rocking, I imagine we might get everyone's other faourite, Shuffle Riff?

I like the idea that LB is sort of 'offloading' all of the GOS etc material into these two releases, then if there is another FM/BN record it would be the 'from the ground up' or even 'writing together' that he mentioned he wanted to do in the future during the SYW recording.

"Shuffle Riff" is okay for me, but what I really want is a quality studio version of "My Little Demon." I've heard a couple of different versions of the song---I think one was a demo and another was a studio version---that have been circulated by fans, but neither sounded as good as the rest of the GIFT OF SCREWS tracks that we've heard. [I've been out of the loop for a while, so maybe a high-quality version of "Demon" is out for trading---if that's the case, would someone be kind enough to share...?]

As for "Down on Rodeo," it's always been one of my favorites from GOS. But yesterday, I listened to the demo again for the first time in a long time, and I was struck by how simple and elegant it sounded, even in its rough form. That's a tune that works well as a fully-arranged [i.e. GOS] version or as a stripped-back version. In fact, I think there's something about the demo that's lacking in the full studio version. What a fine song either way, though.

All this talk had me pulling out my GOS CD as well, to which I haven't listened in many months---probably since SAY YOU WILL was released. Some of the songs that were originally my favorites---"Murrow" and "Come," for instance---didn't hold up as well for me. On the other hand, some of them---"Down on Rodeo," "Gift of Screws," and "Say Goodbye"---sound better than ever. I've already mentioned "Rodeo," but I love the manic sound and vibe of "Gift of Screws." I love it when Lindsey just cuts loose like that. Makes me wonder if the song originated from a studio jam between he and Mike [that MUST be Mick behind the kit, right? Sure sounds like him...particularly the drum fill and stinger at the end of the song!]

As for "Say Goodbye," I still think it's one of Lindsey's best tunes---solo or Mac---EVER! But I don't care as much for the arrangement---the clicking, chicka-chicka sound of the percussion effect and guitar effect didn't age well for my ears. Last night, I pulled out the SOUNDSTAGE DVD and watched this song. Wow. It sounds so much better with just Lindsey's guitar and no other effects. Of course, I also prefer it without Stevie's harmonies, though I have to admit that she sang it better on SOUNDSTAGE than she did on SAY YOU WILL. [For the record, I am NOT anti-Stevie---in fact, although I am definitely a Lindsey fan, I was more impressed with some of Stevie's SYW tunes than I was with Lindsey's, probably because I'd already been listening to all but one of his songs for many months! *grin*]

I absolutely agree. Let's get the GOS tunes out of the way so that he can truly get to some new material. I hadn't heard about Lindsey wanting to "write together" with others---presumably Stevie or FM? What were his exact comments? I've often wondered why he and Stevie haven't written together more often. Have they ever truly co-written a song? ["The Chain" notwithstanding]

I have to admit, though, that part of me is wondering if Lindsey is trying make a last strong effort to release the songs he's got in the can to strengthen his legacy...as if it needs strengthening! He certainly knows himself---that it takes him quite a long time to prepare his songs for release. And let's face it---he's not getting any younger, and he has a family now, and his kids are reaching the age where they're starting to get very active. Could he be looking ahead and realizing that he soon won't have the time---and perhaps not even the inclination---to want to record or perform any more?

Hah. Maybe I'm just projecting my own experiences onto Lindsey...probably NOT a good thing. I've been in a band for many years, but we all have young kids, and about 4 years ago, we stopped performing live because we missed our families. We still record occasionally, but I guess our priorities just changed. Of course, WE all have day jobs, unlike Mr. Buckingham, whose music IS his day job...

That's because it didn't come from the same source.

I always found it lugubrious & antimusical.

I've often wondered why he and Stevie haven't written together more often. Have they ever truly co-written a song?

Apparently not--at least not according to Stevie. But then many of her co-written songs in her own solo life weren't genuine two-writers-in-one-room-at-the-same-time types of endeavors.

You certainly have every right to that opinion, but I have to respectfully disagree. Some of the best songs are sad songs, so if "Down on Rodeo" is lugubrious, then I think that's a GOOD thing. I'd add "Street of Dreams"
and "Say Goodbye" to that list, too. And they also happen to be some of my favorite Lindsey songs.

What do you mean by "antimusical?" Do you mean "not musical" or "anti- musicals," like Carousel, Chicago, etc.? I'm not trying to be a jerk---I sincerely don't understand what you mean. Sorry if I'm being dense.

11 tracks seems fine to me. Most of the "classic" albums by plenty of artists have fewer tracks than that, so I can live with 11. Especially since Lindsey says he's planning a second CD.

If he doesn't release the "electric" CD then I'll be disappointed in the length of UTS because I liked how SYW was long (I would have liked a double album) and would have liked to see him do a really long album. As it is, releasing 2 CDs (I hope he does...) back to back will be enough for me.

I remember in the Destiny Rules doc Lindsey saying he wanted to write some songs with Stevie from the ground up next time around. Or was that in one of his articles? Sorry, I've been out of the loop for a while here, it's all a blur. Maybe someone else here has a better recollection?

As for David's critique of DOR as unmusical, don't worry as his posts are invariably unserious!
